M818 Starting Issue

Recently my M818 has been having the following issue -

When I start it, it runs for 4-5 seconds, then the RPMs go very high (around 2000 RPM) and then it dies. When I try to start it again, it cranks for 10 seconds or so and then finally starts. Everything else seems to be just fine. No different smoke, noises, shaking, etc.

I have searched the forums for this, and come across several threads describing somewhat similar, but not exactly the same issues. Although, I don't seem to be very good at finding certain things on the forums.

Does it sound like I have an issue with air getting into the fuel lines, or could this be something else?

As Will said, it's taking air somewhere in the system. A good place to start is w/ the tank selector valve on the floor. Afterwards, trace the line to the injector pump and check for leaks.

My 818 was leaking a minute amount of air thru the schrader valve at the top of the fuel filter and it did a similar thing. Screw a valve stem cap onto the schrader valve and see if it helps. Is so, then remove valve and plug with a 1/8 NPT plug.

Mine had sucked air in through a crack in the main fuel filter cannister top section. It also had sucked dirt and crap in there and the PT pump was trashed at 7000 miles. Better check carefully, there is nothing to prevent dirt getting in when air is being sucked in. Then the pump is toast. see the thread injection pump woes for pics of the ruined guts.
