M818 winch question

I have a m818 half stuck in the mud,the back wheels half in the mud a little up hill and the winch keeps breaking shear pins,do you guys think that is normal? :jumpin:

What engine rpm are you at while winching?

Are you driving the wheels at the same time?

Are you pulling with a single line?

Single line and rpm just off idle with wheels driving.Do you guys think it's better to always double the line?I used lots of winches on smaller trucks and jeeps.Kinda new to the heavy trucks.

Also see another problem when sheer pin breaks being on a hill nose up ,the drive shaft sides back and falls off winch.That could hit the oil pan or break drive shaft,Iam going to make some kinda hanger for that.

It should not be that loose(falling off).

Sounds like your stub shaft or yoke end is worn.

Well the winch is new to that truck,the drive shaft was kinda seized on ,so I clean shaft and stub on winch it's a snug fit ,but I did put some anti seize on shafts,maybe better with out?

I'd say there is another issue here. Maybe the winch brake is dragging... (Is it possible a rear axle is hung up on a stump?)
I would think (without seeing the actual situation) the stock winch should be able to move the truck, single line, at idle, not driving, without problems.
Snatchblocks/doubling-tripling the line would be for much heavier loads.


Have you done your calcs re how much pull you need to move the truck.
You are not pulling the weight of the truck - it is on wheels - just use it's weight for calc purposes.
How deep is it stuck in the mud (what you have to pull the rear tyres through)?
What angle are you pulling it up?
