M870A1 Dayton to Pilot Hub swap

So since the 870s have the crap Dayton wheels. Problems with these is that noone wants to work on them. General truck tire shops wont touch em. Tires are expensive for radials $300+ .Cheaper for bias plys but still in the $225 range. Those prices include flaps. Most surplus 10.00R15s we get are cracking in the sidewalls.

The dayton hubs use a Set 413 and 414 bearing (HM212049/HM212011, HM218248/HM218210)

The standard 870 build by Load King uses the same outer bearing but a different 653 inner bearing. These hubs are on Ebay for $550 or so. Pfft.

The Holden MTO-020 EET and Load King M322 Trailer both use a hub piloted setup on the same 25k axles. The axles are the same tube diameter as the M870A1. So a direct swap of the whole axle is easily done on the front and the rear axle. The middle axle has the track bars on it so you would have to reweld those brackets and set the track.

The hubs from these axles use the same inner and outer bearing as the daytons. They use a different inner seal but that is easily found at any parts store.

The Dexter Hub/drum assembly can only be purchased as a whole unit. It comes with studs as well. Dexter # 008-400-072. The axles are found on ebay cheap enough complete. I purchased 3 NOS a few years back for $200 each with no intention of needing them but lucked out on this.

Tire size you would want to go to is a 255/70/22.5. These are pretty cheap. Found even at Walmart.com for $185 each for 16ply tires. Wheels are cheap enough as well. 255s are 36in tall, the same as 10.00R15. 255s are the smallest tire available in the 22.5 wheel.

I did that on an old livestock trailer. It worked very well on rear axle, front axle right side would eat a wheel seal in 4-5k miles. The trailer was a spread axle spring ride. Ended up replacing whole front axle.

I will amend my first post.

The use of the hubs listed in post #1 will allow the the use of 20in MRAP wheels on the M870A1. The hubs are that wide 330mm.

I decided to go with a more versatile hub setup.

8 lug Budd pilot Hub made OTR brake products (fleetpride) #1052pa or webb 2027W . Purchased thru Finditparts.com for $125ea for the OTR brand.

Brake drums needed are a 12.25x7.5" style. Purchased thru my local trailer parts place for $120 ea for a WEN brand # 03-00050. Found under durabrake # 12680. Or Webb 63680F.

Hub came studless so using studs part # 101162 for about $3 each. Standard M22x1.5 serrated stud.

Will post up the seal number when i get the hub in.

Found 19.5x6.75 wheels for $50 each used.

245/70/19.5 tires in 16ply are $145 ea after taxes new.


Another option you have is to go with a 8lug 22.5 pilot hub wheel. They are found cheap for around $50 each. This will allow the use of the short 255/70/22.5

The 245s are 33in tall vs the 255s being 36in tall. So the rear of the 870a1 should be 38in tall at the highest point.

Was able to score thirteen 8lug 22.5 pilot hub wheels for cheap with spare 255s on them. 12 new 255s are ready to go as well. Going to have to sand blast the wheels though.

Hubs arrived today. Perfect fit. Reused and repacked the old bearings. Used the old inner and outer nut and lock.

Rear hub seal is Stemco- push on - oil bath or grease - #373-0143.

Got 48 new studs. Around $2 each wasnt too bad.

Drums arrived as well

This will be an outboard setup on the brakes.


Planning on having all the hubs tomorrow and swapped. Then work on the wheels/tires sunday.

I’ve got a M870 trailer, but ours came with stud pilot wheels. Nothing wrong with Daytons though. We just swapped the wheels over to 17.5 tubeless. You could have done that with the Dayton hubs, just bought 17.5 tubeless Dayton wheels.

Are you sure the 22.5 tires won’t rub during articulation? I’ve got scuff marks on the paint of mine where 17.5s have rubbed in certain situations.

255/70/22.5s are 36.6in tall, 10 in section width, 7in sidewall.

10R15s are 36.3in tall with a 10.8 section width. So the 255 is smaller.

I didn’t know shops wouldn’t work on Daytons ( we do all our own tire work). Only reason I can think of is the flunkies in the shop don’t know how to line them up.
We just haven’t had good luck with low profile 22.5, especially cheap ones.
