Project " Honey Badger " M916 to MRAP / HET build thread

So I am building and MRAP-ish style truck out of my m916 and have started to get the ball rolling over the past month. I wanted to get a thread started to track my progress. and keep everything together in one place. I hand drew some crude plans of where i'm headed and we have already decided to change a few things already. This is not an armored truck, it is just in an MRAP / HET body style. The goal is to seat 12-14 people and maybe a couple fold down bed for my family if we want to camping in it somewhere. My main uses for this will be taking kids out for ice-cream, parades and bombing around town. It will have a/c, stereo, dvd players etc. The process is fluid and I'm still figuring some things out. The entire Cab will be one unit where you can walk from the cab straight to the back. It will all be mounted on a built subframe and that entire frame will sit on some air-ride airbags.

So for the truck, I have removed the roller, ramps, 5th wheel and the winch. I'm stopping there until the subframe is built with the new cab ready to mount.

As usual I will be borrowing some specialty tools and building this thing in my driveway. I really wish I had a pole barn or a shop. Weather will determine a lot of my progress this winter, but its been pretty mild so far here in NH. I also have my buddy's m936a2 in the driveway right now for heavy lifting duty for what my tractor can't handle.

I bought a new dressed cab for a m917A1 to replace the little bit rust cab of my m916 and get a more modern layout as well as an ac blower already setup inside.

I started stripping the inside of the new cab today to get and idea of what needed to go and where we are going to cut it open to build into the MRAP body .

There is obviously a ton of wires and controls in this cab that I won't need since they won't match up to my older m916 setup with the cummins. I removed the seats for now, the tower with the 3 shift levers and cables, the drive by wire pedal assembly, the ctis controller and manifold and i pulled out the washer fluid container for now. I also disconnected the control box for the bed and m917 dump body controls.

No turning back on that NOS service cab now.


I also ordered the steel today to start building the subframe.

My goal is under 10k for this build. That might get me a a foundation up here in the North East to meet code. Not mention the property tax increase I would get nailed with.

Awsome I'm only an hour away from kingston so dont be bashful. My lady is happy to get me out of the house and playing with green iron haha

So I had a little work party at my house this past Sunday and had a great crew of guys that braved the cold windy day to come help get some things started.

Hood Removed
Air cleaner and brackets removed
Exhaust removed
Steering shaft removed
Airlines and wiring to cab disconnected and labeled
Airlines to shifter disconnected and labeled
Heater core disconnected, drained capped heater lines.
dash removed and labeled
Cab removed
Air tank removed for dryfit
new cab dry fitted then removed.
covered everything up with tarp for coming Snowstorm

Covered project in Snow and have to wait a bit for stuff to melt before we get working again.

The next step will be to dry fit the new front cab again with lots of different size blocking so we can take accurate measurements for the start of subframe and mounting points for subframe while making sure it and new cab design will clear the transmission and mount. This next step will be a little tedious, but if we get this part right, the next several steps of building subframe and MRAP body should go pretty quickly and efficiently.
