M923 Maintenance Questions

After reading posts and the TMs on the M900 series, the following questions remain - your help is answering them is appreciated:

1) I see the front propeller shaft trunnion bearing is mounted in a slotted rubber bushing. What is the acceptable "play" when using a mechanics pry bar? Not a six footer with a gorilla on the end, just reasonable "oomph". The metal bearing looks fine, I'm more concerned about the rubber bushing. I cannot find acceptable limits in the TMs.
2) The LO calls out a zerk fitting on the speedometer adapter. Either mine doesn't have one or I can't find it. Do all M900s have an adapter? Esp. a M923? If so, where?
3) Is removal of the stone shield required to reach the third (lowest) zerk on the power steering shaft?
4) Does everyone follow the TM to the tee and use compressed air to blow out the remaining transmission oil from the cooler when servicing the cooler filter?
5) How much play is acceptable on the propeller shaft between the transmission and transfer case? I have read (and been told) that torsional play is fine, its the axial play that is bad. What are acceptable limits? I couldn't find any in the TMs.
6) The LO calls for EO on the transfer case linkage. I drive on dusty roads and would think that bad (oil attracts dirt leading to premature wear). Does everyone put EO on their linkage?
7) Is there supposed to be a rubber protector on the air dryer drain below the heat element? It has serrations that looks like something (tube?) should be on it. The parts TM doesn't show anything.
8) It's very difficult to pump grease in the front kingpin caps (both top and bottom). Is that normal? Not having taken one apart, but looking at the TMs, it doesn't look like there is an outlet to the knuckle, leading me to believer it is normal.
9) Last but not least, the LO calls for "Every 6,000 miles (9,600 kilometers) or 6 months, whichever occurs first, disassemble and lubricate front axle shaft and universal joints". I usually don't complain, but that seem excessive. The LO calls for grease inserted in the knuckle. Why disassembly so often? My M923 has 6,000 miles on it, hence, the question. OK, so say I get my mind around the job. The LO calls for TM 9-2320-272-20-1 - so I assume the 24 series TM supersedes the 20 series?

Thank you,

Al,

I believe the speedo adapter is for the A1 or A2 with bigger super single tires. I don't recall seeing one on my base m923.

Very unusual for all 4 to be bad but try replacing one zerk fitting on the king pins. They can rust shut or get clogged with debris and allow no grease to flow especially if she was a snow truck.

Best of Luck!

If I use my high pressure grease gun, I can see grease start to come out from between the cap and knucke. That means its going in, but nowhere for it to go. Is that nornal?

Thanks,
