M923 Recovery Minot, ND to Brookings, SD Standby Contacts - SUCCESS!

Hello Fellow SS,

I am planning a 27 JULY 2012 (this Friday) recovery from Minot, ND to Brookings, SD of a M923. I have a chase vehicle, supplies, and some knowledge. In the event I run into some problems that I can't fix on the road, I was wondering if I could call on some SS for assistance? We're going from Minot to Harvey to Jamestown to Fargo to Brookings unless someone has a better/recommended route. If you can be on standby (even on the weekend in case of big problems), please provide some phone numbers. I would greatly appreciate it. Its a 400 mile trip, long enough to be cautious.

Thanks for anyone willing to help.

Well I have Minot...LOL

Stick to US-281 south when you hit Jamestown, and follow that all the way to US-14 towards Brookings. It's actually less miles 18 miles or so.

Speed limit is slower, but your M923 tops out around 55 anyways.

Personally I don't like interstates (with MV's) and the drive is nicer, haven't been East on US-14 but 281 is nice, nicer than I29.

I also would go with the route bighurt recommended. However I am in Fargo and should be in the area on Friday. Call me at 701-361-2682 if you need any help. Good luck on the auction, I was bidding on one of the items but do not know if I want to be the the $4000-$5000 range to purchase since I am also trying to pick up a Duece.

That is the way that I would go, I would stick away from the interstate I think though. I have looked into buying a rig from the Minot base but I didn't want to go that far with an unknown truck. Good luck on your trip.

I just rolled into Brookings about 15 minutes ago. I had to make one roadside repair (wire short to fuel sending unit), otherwise there was absolutely no problems. What a sweet rig. We didn't get out of Minot until 1 pm so we stopped in Ellensdale, ND and stayed the night.

Thanks to everyone who was willing to lend a hand and made a phone call, especially the North Dakota Military Vehicle Collectors Association (thanks, Greg)and two locals of Minot, Jeremy and Ryan. I wish I could have met each of you personally and I hope to in the future. This was my first trip ever in North Dakota - what a beautiful state - you seem to be immune from the current drought were having down south.

I'm glad I don't live in Minot or I would go broke buying all the good stuff you guys have access to there. The M923 I drive back only had 6,000 miles on it and do believe those to be original as straight and tight as the truck is. It purred all the way back. I also have a M35A2 and just power steering alone in this M923 made it all worth while. The automatic is a close second.

Below are pics. The first two are at Minot prepping the rig outside the DRMO gate with my favorite recovery crew and the rest are at my place in Brookings.

I will need a rear end transplant (not the truck, ME!) - I'm 6'4" and weigh a fair bit so the foam in the seat served no purpose. I won't complain about the seats too much, we all know what they are like.

I'll post more after I de-petrify my butt and get unloaded. Now I need to find a tan cargo cover kit and I'm golden!

Thanks again to everyone that offered to help!

Allen

Glad it went well, watch that gate, she likes to bite. Hopefully we can meet up if and when you make it bake north. Otherwise perhaps I'll stop by on my way through Brookings. I've only driven through there like 4 times in the last year...LOL

Ellendale is nice, I've fueled up there before. What I though was funny is it was a guard weekend and the gas station was full of troops. While I fueled up a M915A1 w/M871 wearing USAF camo...they all just kinda starred.

Best of Luck, nice truck.

The truck looks Great Allen and glad you had a pretty uneventful trip, in this case anyway, if the truck looks and runs as nice as it looks I would say that you got a winner, Great Trucks and a pure joy to drive, Keep in touch with us and one of these days maybe you, bighurt and I could meet and have a 900 series convoy! Take care Allen and good luck!

Hey all,
So I won one of the the GL auction items at Minot myself, an '84 M923. Just thought I'd introduce myself and say hello, especially to those in the Minot area, or ND in general. Not sure what I'll end up doing with her but the price was right and she shows a whopping 721 miles. I think a total overhaul was done "by readiness sus maintenance" in 2007 but it's hard to tell what all was done to it, and what hasn't been touched. Anyway, again just saying hi and interested in knowing more about the 'ol girl, I think its a creampuff but looks are one thing, real condition and value are another. Link to pictures below, I hope that's ok per the forum rules

Do I dare ask what you all think I should ask if I re-sell it? Again, don't want to anger the mod gods or take advantage of anyone's time but can't find anything about asking opinions of worth in the FAQs or rules and I'm not certain if I'm even going to sell the thing. I see them listed on Truck Paper and sold on eBay for $9000 plus, with a lot more miles on them than this but she's in amazing shape, just plain-Jane.

I think what you have seen then for is fair. Mabey 1 or 2 k more if that is the miles since complete rebuild and its rust free.

Thanks boss,
I'm trying to figure out exactly what GL meant when they said "This vehicle was overhauled at Readiness Sust Maint in 2007." It only shows 719 miles but has 2 hrs operation, so I have no clue what's going on with when they swapped gauges, and what was done. By the work order included, it just looks like they re-did the cab but it does have anti-lock brakes so at least one or two mods were done at some point by uncle Sam. Will include pics...
