M929 mud flap laws

Would a 929 dump truck be required by Texas state law to run mud flaps if the truck is running single rear wheels? I know all trucks running dual rears require flaps, just not certain if they're necessary.

No matter what the law says in any state I think it is better to have them. You can get the whole kit minus mud flaps for 30 bucks at a truck part place. When you go off road you can just pull the pin and store them somewhere. I don't want to break any ones windshield because I want to look cool. Just because some states say your insurance pays for your windshield like Fl. does not mean that I am happy that it happened to my windshield. It's called respect for others.
If I remember right in Va. the end of the mud flap has to be in line with the center of the axle to be correct.

In this case, I think the legality is secondary, doing the right thing is primary. And having mud flaps on a commercial size vehicle is the prudent thing to do, even if its not required by law. Of course it varies by state. As far as the Texas reference, I would think that law was written decades ago, before super singles came along, even on trailers. If you were pulling a semi trailer in Texas with super singles and no mud flaps and got pulled over, I seriously doubt that you would be able to get away with telling the LEO that you didn't need mud flaps because of the singles.

Also some states REQUIRE a tarp that covers a loose load in the bed (anything OVER the rails need to be covered), mainly dumps, roll offs, ect. ANY truck, also make sure your bed, tail gate rails are clean, this is a ticket getter even if nothing falls of the truck.

Also they are not required if you are bobtailing in a truck tractor, (M818, M931, M931a2)

Again, varies by state. Tx requires them on my 1ton dodge dually, but not on my M931A2. AZ requires them on the M931A2 but not the Dodge dually.

As so many people stated above, whether mandated or not it's the considerate thing to do. Throw a rock and break someone's windshield and it makes for a **** day for someone even if insurance picks up the tab. Why cause that when it's so easily preventable?

I can’t comment on Texas law, however I can offer some insight into Federal law and most state DOT thinking. Most commercial type vehicles require mud flaps on the rear axle, trucks, tractor when bob-tailing or trailer. And they must be long enough to extend past the axle. In other words, at least half of the tire(s) must be covered. The purpose is the prevent stones from being thrown from the tread and or rocks from between the duals.

Now here in the Peoples Republic of Maryland if a vehicle is tagged Commercial it better have mud flaps of you will be the recipient of some paying paper.
However if the vehicle is tagged Historic and the vehicle didn’t come with them, 818s, 931A2s then they aren’t required.

Joking aside, I tend to drive a lot of unpaved roads and such and was tired of rocks from the front tires beating on the paint job and everything else under the truck. The plastic cup and heater element on the bottom of my air dryer got shattered because of a rock. Big tires with big treads pick up big rocks. I do a lot of things day to day that are not required by law, but are considerate of others. This is one of them.

Good call on getting them regardless. All insurance companies dont cover that. Esp if its only liability. Anyone got good ideas on getting them holes in the middle so it can flex easier to hook the flaps up for dumping?
The reason I ask is because the civvy semi flaps are less than $30/set and I can't even find the real ones like came on my truck. I would rather have the OEM ones if someone knows a good source.

Tractor supply place sells stall mats in 1/2" and 3/4" thickness for reasonably cheap. I cut it and use it for all kinds of stuff. It seems it'd be a reasonable choice for something to make a mud flap from. It may be a bit stiff if you're wanting to duplicate the folding oem dumptruck flaps.

I tore one off my m929a2 and then hauled my excavator back home without fixing the flap. It cost me a windshield on my excavator! That was only a 2 mile trip too. Super singles especially pickup rocks even big ones. My m931a2 picked up a 2" rock on the rears and threw it over the cab and landed on the hood.
