Making tie-down adapters

Putting this in the HMMWV forum as a new thread instead of "what I did to my HMMWV on my summer vacation [and other weekends throughout the year]" as it can apply to any truck.Wanted to put a set of tie-down d-rings/loops in the cab for strapping stuff down on the tunnel. Yeah, I could get a rope under the beam behind the front seats, bungees galore, wanted something that looked like it was MADE for the application.I found some "GPCA Tie-down D-rings for Jeep Wrangler, 6-Pack, Compatible with Jeep factory D-rings" on amazon thinking how hard could it be to find washers/inserts/cone inserts/step washers to fit? Spent about an hour scouring the web for jeep parts, other mfr. parts, even had a 6mm chromated arbor/reducer for an air tool the mfr doesn't sell aftermarket so I poked around in my parts bins (Folgers coffee containers, the giant economy size), drawers, then I saw a rivnut sitting on my bench I hadn't put away, put it into the hole and was in business. Half hour later I had six of them cut down (still need to file a little bit more off, I think, on some of them), inserted w/ bolts/washers (plain nut is temporary, just there to hold parts together) lock nut, now to find ideal placement on the tunnel.

Rivnuts. Whoever it was who invented these things, I'd buy him a beer. A MUCH cheaper/easier improvisation then a lot of other alternatives.

The bottom of the channel behind the seats is hollow so you can get a nut up to thd bottom of the bolt. You shpuld slready have 2 tie down loops between the front seats.

Those look great, and a great price. If you're living in the UK. EU and elsewhere not so much. With postage, the price is maybe 50% over what I paid, then I'd still need to replace the hardware (Stainless steel and aluminum don't play by the same rules Luigi Galvani figured out in the late 18th century), I'd be using the zinc chromate-finished stuff anyway.

Plus the time I'd already put into looking for some - and the spacers - started eating into my Stargate SG-1 vegging time and I DO have a job all which all kind of precluded keeping up the hunt.

There ARE no d-rings between the front seats in my truck, nor holes for them. I put a halon fire extinguisher behind the driver's seat on the brace/channel. Got some locations figured out and having spent many hours working under that tunnel I know I'll be able to reach up to put nuts/washers on the bolts while "soldier B" (usually a pair of vise-grips or my kids) hold the bolts in place.

There is 8 ea. spots on floor for factory tie downs...and 2 of them are between front seats [ through B pillar ] for 2 man bulkhead, and other accessories.
