Marker light brackets holding water

I pulled the marker light brackets and grille today so I can have Poof sandblast them for me to clean them up. I noticed that when I pulled the marker light brackets there was water trapped between them and the fender. I was wondering what the thought is of placing washers between the bracket and the fender so water will run out and not cause more rust issues in the future or is there a better option? I will get pics posted after the paint goes on and the parts are put back on the truck.

I like the nylon washer idea even better than a metal washer. I know it won't look original to have a washer in there but at least it should save the fender and bracket from rusting away.

How about welding a bead along the bracket so it will not allow water to get through. You can always caulk it a bit to smooth it out.
