Why do you need $200.00 worth of batteries? Get two of the cheapest car batteries you can find. Trust me, the starter doesn't give a crap if it is 6TL's powering it or 2 wal-mart specials. 24 volts is 24 volts.
Well I just ordered a new Circuit breaker. And as far as batterys. It takes 2-12v and most Batts. are a $100 a piece. Im a big fan of Oreillys Super Start. After playing the Walmart game. I love the super start AGM thats what I got in my CUCV. And my 1 year old Duralast just went out for my boat so im going with a new super start for my boat and maybe the 51R72 super start for the Mep002 Due to the 51R being in the Mep Wiki

Ok I got my main breaker installed. By the way its the part # from the TM CD3Z1421-1. I picked it up from {PLCCENTER.com} $80 shipped. Not bad :D. They even sent a little bag of candy to snack on while installing it.

I also installed the venier speed control cable. I spent 2hrs with engine off trying to adjust it but no go. I cranked the engine twice but shut it down due to bad govenor adjustments any tips. It looks like all parts or there and the engine shut off solnoid is working OK.

I have printed out the pages from the TM on the Govenor section but no luck.
The govenor linkage just slides up and down and dosent move the goveneror arm much.

Ok I got it. After searching old threads for hours I fixed the problem. My governor ip arm was sticky. I use PB blaster an kept working the arm up and down till the gov linkage would move it easily.

I also tested the charging circuit briefly. The stator appears to be good. 35-40vac on the stator leads disconnected. Ohming things out as per the TM looks good. Got a little voltage around 9vdc at the fuse holder to ground. The batteries are fully charged and running the machine for 45min I got no voltage drop at the batt a steady 24.9.

I pulled the 002 out the shop on my m101a2 and ran it for 45min no leaks and all gauges seem to work good. 42psi on the oil pressure.
The new circuit breaker works great got power to the mail lugs 120vac from L1-L-3 and convenience outlet. I ran a 1kw load from the convenience outlet. The hrtz gauge moves a little with different loads.

At the end of 45 min run session I was maintaining 60-62 hrtz pretty steady. And the governor was working better all the time. I think it's a pretty sound machine. I shut it down and started it back up with the gov still set and it went right back up to 60hrtz.

On a side note
I think my MEP 016d is louder than the 002

That is great news, the MEP-016d likely sounds louder because it is at a higher pitch, they are both loud, I plan on working on mine some this weekend also. I have a sound level meter and will try to compare them side by side (if I can find it).

i should probably should start a new thread but new at this and still figuring out how to get around. I've purchased two MEP002's and they both run, produce 110 at the outlets and 120 at the L1 and L3 poles, just not getting either the load meter or the voltage meter to work. Someone please tell me it's something easy as it's happening to both generators, strange. Both have low hour meter readings and run well.

Any help would be appreciated...

Failure of the meters is common on these sets due to high vibration, weather exposure, etc. and replacement parts can be expensive. Thankfully these gauges are not critical to operation of the generator, and there are some simple work arounds like using a $20 Kill-A-Watt meter plugged into a outlet for volts and hz measurement, or if your using the generator for household backup, get a transfer switch panel with a built in amp meter. The otherwise good condition MEP-002a I bought a couple of months ago suffers from this problem as well, when I bought it the battery meter was full of water, the volt meter has about a 20VAC swing (rock solid when tested on multimeter now that I fixed the AVR transistor), and the current meter needle sticks at 25% going up and coming down.

I've been watching and wanting to buy for years and finally took the plunge, paid around $1600 for both units and after changing oil and fuel and filters got both running, love at first sound, afraid this might be addictive as noted in other threads. Hoping to sell one to feed said addiction and trying to figure a reasonable price...

Any recomendations on a good transfer switch panel and what are the costs, etc. I've seen that electrictians need to be involved but sounds like most aren't very knowledable with generators and set ups.

Again, any help is appreciated and glad to find kindred spirits out there.........

I think $1200 is a very good deal for a 7.5kW capable Diesel gen set. Those 002s are very good for hunting and fishing camps and applications where a big central AC is not required. They'll usually run just about everything except a big central AC.
You can probably get around $1500, IMO.

If your talking about individual load selecting manual transfer panels, Gen-trans / Reliance Controls seem to own that market. These make a great option for running selected loads only in a typical house, particularly the ones with built in load meters, I have one a rebranded Reliance Controls panel at my house which does fine for my limited loads on a 3-5KW generator for now. Note it is often possible to find these sorts of panels for sale on ebay, craigslist, etc. for well below retail if you do a bit of digging and creative searching (generator panel, generator switch, transfer switch, double throw switch, etc.), part of the reason I suspect is they are often bundled with big box store standby generators, sometimes these generators are being installed in place of previous units, or with whole house switches, in off grid installations, which leaves the owners with a useless to them transfer switch.

I just bought this Transfer switch. Its a manual GE transfer switch.
Model TC10324R from Home Depot. $330 deliveried. I searched a ton of sites and and this one was the best price and what I was looking for my application.

It's great getting the info and sharing with folks. $250 sounds good for the switch, let me see what i can come up with. Just so happens that i have one of those big central AC's and now i'm thinking of going with a MEP 003a and selling the 002a i was going to keep for myself....

Now everyone has me interested in more of this surplus equipment(truck, welder, etc.). It appears it's mainly a matter of location of equipment to be had with the current fuel costs to pick the stuff up. Anyway I'm also looking for a 10 HP(L100?) air cooled diesel to make a long tail boat motor if anyone has one to spare.

The only reason I'm selling my GenTran R1220 is I got a very good deal on a new Cutler-Hammer 200A manual transfer switch.

GenTran R1220 is good up to 30kW. The gen input breaker is 125A.

You can't have my L100, though. The Chinese 186 motors are clones of the Yanmar Ls.

I hear ya. I would have got a RELIANCE 10 circuit transfer panel switch. But I have a 100amp subpanel running to my shop. The shop panel is running my 240v water well.

So I figured I would get a 200amp transfer switch and be done with it. Just have to turn off 2-3 breakers on the house panel (range , AC, water-heater) then should be fine. I plan on installing a 4 pin plug box off my transfer switch and set the mep002 up with a 4 pin gen plug . So I can swap out with my civy champion 7-9 kw easier an quicker.

I'm running a 50A twist lock SO cable whip from my gen to my transfer switch. I was planning to wire the transfer switch when the power went out but it hasn't gone out, yet.

maybe we can work up some kind of trade. I'm close to Warner Robins and planning on bidding on a couple of items in the upcoming auction. check if you see anything of interest, i may be able to pick up and deliver at least half way to you(brother just south of Dothan I need to deliver a MEP 002a to).

I can't say anything good about Wal-Mart batteries, other than they will cover them under warranty, when I bought my Ford F-250 used in July of 2008 it came with a pair of then brand new Walmart yellow Everstart MAXX group 65 batteries with 36 month full replacement warranty (either 5 or 7 year prorated). By the summer of 2010 both batteries were so weak that if the truck did not crank on the first try they did not have enough reserve for a second try, so I took them to Walmart, one tested bad, the other was right on the borderline, they replaced with a new matching pair. Which were just about dead again this spring when I replaced them with a pair of higher quality $100 batteries from the local battery warehouse store a couple of months ago (the pair of 750 CCA batteries tested out at just under 400 amps combined on a warm day in May).

Walmart does no prorate it's batteries after first 3yrs, Starting this year. Just when thru this with an older battery . The store refuse to on it even with a recipt Called everstart they are the ones that told me about the warranty but could not do anything, walmart has to. Call Warlmart main office about it, they never call back
