MEP 803 10 kw Will not start from S1 on panel

I have 24 volts up to the S1 on 2 and 4 but not on 6 and 8. Suggestions? I was following an old thread, but it ended.

Has this generator ever run in front of your eyes? Or is it new to you?

Have you downloaded the TM's?

Can you read a schematic?

My military MOS was 52 B 20 Generator operator mechanic. That was roughly 48 years ago. Yes, I can read a schematic. Generator is new to me, and it will start and run in battle mode if I hold the magnetic plunger back in the retracted position. I was reading an old post on this non start issue and traced a 24-volt reading as far as the S1 switch. I have 24 volts up to the S1 on 2 and 4 but not on 6 and 8 terminals. Thanks for your response. I recently purchased the technical manual dated 20 October 1983 also identified as TM56115-585-24P. I am unaware of downloadable TM's. I have only started and run the genny for a short period of time as oil pressure gauge does not register and I am assuming that is part of the electrical issue. I plan on installing a direct oil pressure gauge as a secondary confirmation of pressure. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Jack.

Also, the fuel pump does activate when the S1 switch is in the prime / run position, just no response when moved to start position.

We may know one another! I too started out as a 52B20.

I have to run, but, if you have 24 volts on S1-2 & S1-4, you have to have voltage on S1-6 & S1-8, unless the S1 jumpers are missing. The first two versions of S1 had the jumpers external, the third version had them built in. So test again, in the run position. If still no joy, then the jumpers are missing. I have to go now to work. Later,

Jack, you can also look for continuity between all 4 positions on S1. 2,4,6 and 8 should all have continuity to each other. if they don't then your missing some of the jumpers. If that's the case you can just make up some short wires to connect the disconnected terminals together.

Got my AIT training @ Fort Belvoir Va later part of 1973. From there went to missile sites Homestead Fl Charlie Company then last year in Kaiserslautern Germany. Were only allowed to change the oil at the missile sites. 43rd Maintenace company. I worked off an 8-month backlog of broken generators in two weeks...so great to finally get to do my job. Captain called me in and asked me to take charge of his generator section of in his motor pool. I agreed to do that went in and cleaned the generator area up paint, hazard warnings, clean fuel bowls and painted all units. My area was the only part of the entire company that passed the IG inspection...98% score...from then on it was stars and stripes with a cup of coffee go anyplace any time no questions, LOL...Great times.

I went through Ft. Belvoir in Feb-May, 1973. I went to Germany, and was assigned to C-3/7 ADA, (Hawk). On the Tac. Site, we did it all. The only thing we did not do was engine and main gen replacement, (but when I went with the gen set to DSP, did it there). I stayed there 7 years. Kinda liked it there. As a SP/5, was on again, off again the Section Chief, depending on if we had an SSG or not.

Then 1 year in Ft. Lewis, 709th Missile Maintenance. First day in the unit I got promoted to SSG. Ran the Generator section and was a PLT. Sgt for the whole year.

Went back to Germany, to C-3/7 ADA, for three years. Was like going home.

Then off to WOC in 1985, and then to Ft. Bliss to join up with the Patriot Bn. 6/3 ADA, (later reflaged to 1/7 ADA). Each BN had its own DS Company. I was in the 549th Maint. After collective training, we deployed to Kaiserslautern. After 1 year there, (I was excess to TO&E) I fnished off my 20 years at the 611th Ord. Co. They were the DS/GS Back up for Patriot and Hawk. I was there about 7 years.

All my Hawk buddies told me wonderful stories about Homestead.

I loved being a soldier, and still miss the life.

So you were @ Ft Belvoir probably a class ahead of me. Aha Yes, Homestead had the Hawk sites.. A,B,C,D and there were also 2 nike sites. I never spent a day in the Homestead barracks as I lived in Key Largo prior to enlisting...30 min south of Homestead. So, they sent me back home after AIT 2 Belvoir. Jack

Kaiserslautern was where I was assigned to the 43 Maint. Co. Quite the town, remember the "straus strip" line up on paydays...LOL My twin boys were born in Launstul Hospital (Might be spelled wrong). Moved from Kaiserslautern just down the street from the "RO KO KO CLUB" out to Otterbach cheaper rent. Jack

Its hard to see from picture #3, but it looks like no jumpers. Can you take a shot to see the side away from the camera?

You were correct, it was missing a jumper between the 4 and 8 terminals on the S1 switch. Thanks for the input. Jack
