MEP 803A - Clueless in Texas

Finally had time to work on a 803A 10K gen. After a slave cable hook up (after filling it with all fluids needed & adding new batteries), I attempted to start it. Turned over, but saw a ton of diesel leaking from an open nozzle....question is, should this nozzle be capped off, or is there supposed to be a hose connected there, and if there is a hose missing, where does it lead to? Looked at TM, but I am a hands on photo guy, and all the words and drawn diagrams just confuse me (unless the TM reguards a HMMWV). Anyway, is there a generator scientist/professional who can hold my hand and explain what I am looking at? Thnx

It's kind of hard to tell from the pic, but I think that shows the primary fuel filter is missing.

Do you have the TM's (tech manuals)?

Yes, I have access to the TM, but there's no photos or diagrams showing this...or anything else.

Get TM number TM 9-6115-642-24 from the TM section on this forum.

Page 39 shows the parts breakdown of the unit. Refer to item 3, fuel water separator
Page 51 shows the fuel system schematic.
Page 421 shows the water separator

I don't know what else is missing but that part is a simple spin on filter.

Thank you, but I am lost. There's no information as to what the part number is. I work with photos and hands on info...TM's are for personnel whom already familiar with an item. I don't know crap about these.

What really needs to be done here is teach you to read a TM.

1. TM 9-6115-642-24 is the operators TM.
2. TM 9-6115-642-24P is the Parts TM.

The parts TM shows you parts, like this:


Right after the exploded diagram of the parts, is a page that gives you information on what parts were listed in the exploded diagram:



Refer back to the picture. The filter is in Figure 17, Item number 75. Look at the item description. Item #75 has a part number of 85285-F. Plug that into your search engine and get the relevant information. Should you want to know the NSN, turn to the back of the -24P to the


Look through there until you see:



And you have the NSN.

You can also go to the stickies and find a list of service parts. Or maybe download the TM's and study up.

That was the problem. Needed that fuel filter. Starts and runs for about 30 seconds and shuts off. None of the green lights work along with the on/off emergency shut off button on the switch panel. Checked a few fuses inside and they were all good.

Can you give a little more detail please?

When you replaced the filter, did you bleed the air out of the high pressure lines?

How exactly have you been starting it? Are any of the red lights coming on?

Which green lights?

If you look inside the front panel, switches have a label by them, S1, S6, etc.

Just so we are all on the same page, which emergency switch are we talking about? The big red push/pull one?

Thank you for your help!!! Yes, the red push pull off switch. Once I replaced the fuel filter, I primed for about 20 seconds and the engine stared after about 30 revolutions (motor turning over). It ran and then shut off after 15 20 seconds. I started it another 4 times and it did the same thing. The light bulbs on the outside of the instrument panel are green, and none of them came on. The master switch (prime & run) does not work. I am starting it from the inside). Voltage dial does work along with the adjustment switch. The coolant temp, hours meter, oil pressure, and battery charge dials do not work.

I think that it is really is better to follow the TM for starting and troubleshooting. The various safety and control features of these generators do run via the prime / run switch. So if that isn't working, I would start there. Jumping around can cause more issues than just following the manual. (I know that you wrote you aren't really a manual type guy, but on the other hand these aren't typical consumer junk, though they do take a little time to get used to. Start at the beginning and read them slowly all the way through. Reread as needed, then pick up a tool. I think that these units have their particular way of doing things, and it took me awhile to begin to see it.)

I would post a photo of the other side of the dashboard, and in particular the back side of the prime / run switch. A second photo or two of the rest of the inside of the control box might help as well.

Thank you. I plan to do more reading once I have my new glasses in about 10 days (I have to get new glasses every year since I turned 65). Will include the pics you requested tomorrow. Since the main board has no power, I will look into the power source and any fuses/breakers in between. Pretty certain all the gauges and switches are good, just need power.
