For sure switch them out as a test. You can buy new ones for a few hundred dollars. They have recently become available.

You can adjust the magnet. That is not likely your problem. Get the surging under control first. Then tweak the magnet only if it doesn't shut down correctly.

Limited time amongst the other to do items, found a power point presentation. Didn't know about the adj doc in the TM section. Will look for it later tonight.

Ok, need some direction.

MP831a... the governor actuator on my unit surges, running the rpm up and then down. Replaced the actuator from another unit that ran well, and the same thing happened with the swapped out actuator.

Specks are on target @ 10 oms drawn on the actuator.

When I find time, will search out the schematic and trace down that circuit. In the mean time any ideas? Thanks. HC.

Where are the governors available? Are they new? I bought a used one on Ebay as a spare but it surges. Thanks

There is the setup for the governor. You can ask them about buying a new one.
Hey Diesel... thanks. I've been beating my self up working on this **** thing..... took a break and your link helped me have an & there I was moment.

I came to the realization, that if the rpm/voltage is off, the governor slows down, then when it slows down, the gov adds rpm, and repeats the slow down / increase rpm cycle, to the point where eventually due to the flux in voltage, the magnet's are with in reach of each other & it shuts down.

On your surging unit if you put a DVM leads set on vdc across terminals J and H (5.3 vdc at low speed and 11vdc at high speed), I would bet money that your voltage is going to be bouncing on these terminals. This output should be stable in proportion to load on gen set which determines its speed from VAC inputs on termals A,B,C. Be careful of training module as it had error. It could be that your stability pot is out of adjustment, but I doubt it. I am with DA's assessment. More than likely a failing governor module. Just call GAC and order new one is safe bet. Most time they have in stock, if not it will be a few week lead time at most

Thanks!!!!! I work on this in the next couple of days, weather here turned a bit colder.

Funny thing, is I took a gov out of another unit and put it in services. Same behavior. What's the probability of two gov's being bad.... possible but not probable.

These are great little units. Like to see them up and running!

Have you done the governor adjustment procedure? If gain and stability are set correctly I would think it is something else. I agree that two separate controllers exhibiting same symptoms unlikely. Possible could be a fuel issue, pinhole air leak? I had another style gen that you could turn on prime and it would pack with fuel, then a few minutes later would start surging. Turned out to be sucking air on suction side fuel line to fuel pump. If air is getting in, voltage to controller for speed reference would be changing that would cause controller to go hunting. Just a thought. Another possibility is that your fuel pump has intermittent problem. Another rabbit you may have to chase.

Hey everyone, I am new to this site, but I could really use some help on my 831. I can not get power to the load studs. When the generator is running there is a green light and a loud buzzing noise on the K15, and when I close the circuit interrupter it burns up the relay everytime. If anyone has an idea on why and can help, it would be much appreciated.

I responded to your other post as well. Make sure that the K15 relay is 120vac coil. Starter lockout relay. The other two ice cubes are 24vdc coils. Mine had been swapped around before I bought it. It didn't burn up the 24vdc ones but boy would it chatter.



Same thing happened to me. The relays are cheap on Ebay.

Hi I have been able to source everything i have needed for my MEP831A except a fuel cap. I Googled the NSN but got nothing. Anybody have a source? Thanks Ted

Hi Chris, well I got so frustrated adjusting my second units governor that I bit the bullet and ordered a new governor [$341 delivered]. I checked my governor voltages and there is 28 volts between G and F on both of my generators as compared to the 24 V that that the manual dictates. Any thoughts? Thanks Ted

That is just output of your charging circuit. All of my units run 26-28vdc. If you check voltage at your batteries you will see same. I anxious to hear about your new governor control. I'll bet the unit is way more stable and easy to adjust.
