I've never tried to use nitrogen. How effective is it?

One of the many reasons that I keep at least one 15lb CO2 extinguisher handy when running a generator...
It stops combustion. So it works well. The reason I use it is I have an unreasonable number of tanks in my shop .

NASA uses it to pressurize fuel tanks. If they use it, its got to be effective.
Roger that. Also used on almost all aircraft these days after the 1996 TWA-800 crash.

As I wrote above, I just hadn't ever seen or heard of it used to shutdown engines before.

And if NASA uses it, it must be good. Right? Tang anyone?

All the best,

I'll take my tang with alcohol

Simple fire physics. You need fuel oxygen and heat. N² is an oxygen displacer (it's actually 78% of atmosphere at sea level).

I loved Tang as a kid. My Father worked in the Aerospace Industry. He got to know NASA people and Astronauts, well. He brought Tang and other goodies home for "Testing".

Another item he brought home was Eastman 912. One of the first Super Glues. It had to be kept in the refrigerator. One night we had a huge party at the house. All people from Aerospace companies and some Pilots from Australia. One of my Fathers friends did not believe that any glue could set up in seconds. After lots of mixed drinks, beer and back and forth B.S., my Father and this guy went out in the front yard and did a "test." The guy looped his arm around a telephone mast, put a drop on his finger and stuck it on his nose. The howling and screaming could be heard in the next county. Then my father walked back in the house and left him there. Now this was in Utah, 1971. We were about the only non Mormon family in a 1 mile circle. This did not endear my Father, (or our whole family) to the good folks around us. People laughed at this poor guy till they almost passed out. At last my Father went out with a razor blade and carefully sliced more finger than nose.

Got the one generator completely apart, have a list of parts, just waiting on checking the power generation unit to ensure it's good due to severe corrision from the ABC Extinguisher. On another note... electronics may be shot due to what appears to be a negative terminal hooked up backwards that was the root cause of the fire. The main ground back to the power terminal posts appears to have been hooked to the positive on the alternator or the alternator somehow shorted and caused it. I need to trace the wiring diagrams.... that'll be fun. White to White..... that's what the DMM is for.
It has a sticking exhaust valve, rings held mineral spirits well for a period of time. I cleaned up short block just need to address head now.

The second one I got, I have all the fluids changed, have verified fuel is present, that the 24v fuel solenoid is working, that the valves are moving, and that there is compression via hand turning (can feel the compression) and there is no leak through the oil dipstick port when in compression stroke. I removed the intake and exhaust shot some diesel at it and it won't start. Just some smoke out of the exhaust and smell of fuel. Really not trying to pull this one all the way down like the first one.... if anyone else has any ideas let me know. I've seen some reference of checking the MPU voltage but not sure what the benfit is since if the diesel has fuel it should run. I also don't see the MPU mentioned and voltage values for it in the TM.

I would suggest opening a separate thread for each gen set. It will make your and our lives easier later on.

What TM are you using? Because the info you need is in the -24 TM. The short answer is that the MPU need to produce as close as possable to 3.0 VAC when you turn the engine over with the S10 switch. If the MPU is bad, or not adjusted right, no mater how much diesel you have in the tank, or no mater how long you turn it over, it will NOT start.
