Air actuators are only 2 positions retracted or extended and can be too fast requiring restricted valving to slow it down. Plus I wanted it to just have a single 12 volt connection.
but once tuned, they are really good at going between point A and B with relatively predictable characteristics… it just seemed like it took a long time to pop up… “hey where’s the gun” Taps toe for 2 minutes…:)

Pneumatic actuators are excellent and clean. When I worked for the animated robotics company (Sally Corporation, in Jacksonville FL) all our characters were pneumatic and was always fun getting the speeds correct to match the type of movement. Disney uses hydraulics in all of there characters for the ultimate versatility but super messy when you get a leak. Pneumatic just leaks air into you fix it, which was much better for our customers that did very little preventative maintenance.
The company transitioned to building more dark rides than individual characters. But still a great company.
