Well I been around trucks and heavy Equipment for many years and I have a couple Deuces ,and a muffler on a Deuce to me is like trying to quiet down a Harly Davidson MotorCycle, And expect it to remain as popular as it is!!! Itook the mufler off my 1997 Dodge 2500 Cummins, and I gained 5 MPG. more!! It is not really that much louder!! Phil

I had Harleys’. Been from Texas to Canada. Wife, Kids, House, no more, one day again. One I used for funeral escorts. I had baffles that that I slid into the muffler to quite it down. Took them out for normal ridding. Differences are the muffler exits to the rear on the Harley. The deuce exits above the cab in your ear. The muffler on the deuce quits it down enough to carry on a conversation. Short trips to town and you will not be deaf. I would like to run the exhaust with a muffler out the bottom someday. I have driven big trucks both with and with out mufflers. I will take one with a muffler any day. My last hearing test proves it. First three are at the bottom of the scale below normal, everything after that is at the bottom of the scale. Good thing is tone. Some people I can hear fine, others not at all. Hearing aids are next. I have learned to wear hearing protecting, something I never did younger.

I did the NAPA muffler thing like most others here had to make up some bracket extensions. I painted it with three coats of 1500 degree paint and now it is rusted at the seams, go figure

Add me to the list of people who have done this mod.

The sound is great - I can hear myself talk in the cab, and the turbo sounds much more aggressive. Exhaust sound is very big-rig, and the difference is open headers vs. nice magnaflow as far as I'm concerned.

HIGHLY recommended.

That could come in handy!

I have a muffler mod as well. Still wear ear plugs for long trips, but don't need them for around town. Plus its easier to carry on a conversation. In addition to being able to open the passenger window without that bark in your ear. Can't really tell a power difference, these things are under powered as it is.

On the singled 900 series 5 tons, the tires are the noisiest part of the truck.

Muffler Mod

OK I just jumped on the muffler modification band wagon and here are the results that I had. It took about an hour, very easy to do. I was going to make a new bracket but instead just slip rolled a new strap and broke the ends so I could us the old one. I was able to make the pipe longer to get it above the cargo cover, it makes it a lot nicer. I still have to paint it but will have to wait until it gets warmer.

Here are the sound stats:

Before: Idle 94-95dB
35mph 99dB
45mph 103dB
55mph 102dB

After: Idle 86-87
35mph 95dB
45mph 96dB
55mph 97dB

Max uphill dB uphill was 106dB before and 98dB after modification.

I did not notice any power difference but even though the decibel drop was not as great as I had expected it was much easier to hear in the cab. I would suggest doing it.

RE: Muffler Mod

I think a big portion of the enjoyment of this modification is in the change of pitch.

The "C" turbo still spools and whistles quite nicely, but not at near the same ear-piercing level as before. I actually thought I broke my turbo somehow because it wasn't screaming from the outside on idle!

The NAPA part is plated w/zink (or alum)

--- Rustoleum BBQ black seems to last and is low cost. Eastwood's Stainless Steel Coating is good too. JimK

Hey, I don't post much. Sorry, not a real big yammer.. You guys have deffinatly convinced me to pop into NAPA and get one for my Duece. I have three boys that ride along with me and getting them to become one with hearing protecting is a pain! Thanks again.

Thanks bigmillman. I used a NAPA elbow seen posted somewhere here, and a NAPA straight cut in half (shared with neighbor) welded on w/welds ground flat. To update that rattle issue I had, it went away after I removed and reinstalled the muffler. Second favorite mod, after the turbo.

Has anyone radically altered the exit location taking it back past the cab and exiting at the duals? The old M52 is that way. Just curious because moding the exhaust does not mean having to keep it in the same place.

:ditto: i been wondering the same thing. Would think it would look alot cleaner, plus would make it quieter. Before i go to hacking up the exhaust and rerouting it i would like to hear if it makes much diffrence. I would think it would, but wanta hear what you all got to say first.
