I'd be more tempted in your case to buy the boss's truck especially if it's free. Second option would be to go straight to Uncle Sam via Government Liquidation. From there find a DRMO close to you to look at what's available and the condition it's in. If money isn't a problem, then check out Clark and the others. I got 'Storm from the DRMO in Great Lakes (Chicago). I had about four months to check her out, was very pleased with what I found out and outbid everyone else for her.

there's tons of dealers out there, but in my search I narrowed it to Joe YOung, Eastern Surplus, but finally settled on Idaho Motor Pool based on referrals and proximity to my area. I got a great truck through them.

Where are you located? You don't want to drive one of these beasts too far, and you DON'T want to ship them! $$$$$$$$ I was lucky to make it 420 miles with only a fried light switch that cost us a night. Max safe speed is about 50, and that can take a long time on the road.

That's why I'd jump on the free truck- it's close and it's free. What more could you ask for? Paint's cheap, and so would a whole new brake system assuming it comes to that. How mechanically inclined are you? I'd take a crack at getting that running before buying a whole new truck. There wasn't any in town, so I had to go for a solid, reliable truck to get me home. Now that I have that I can look for non-runners I can tow home :)

I would be all over the free truck myself. If you don't wan't to work on it, check with Dave Newman. He is a fair guy to deal with and represents his trucks as they are. When you buy a truck from GL, the only thing you get is a truck. No guarantees that it runs or ever has. At least with a dealer, you can test drive it. I agree with MM on one issue, shipping hurts badly. I don't agree on driving them far distances. I love taking mine on road trips and folks know that. At 50 MPH you can see things that have been along your route that you've been missing for years. I recently took a 400 miler on way. It took me less than an hour extra travel time to arrive. For me at least, driveing one is an escape from the troubles of life. My wife doesn't ride too far with me but I wouldn't mind if she did, can't hear a darned thing in these trucks.

you're right- I should rephrase my statement. I'd have no problem driving my truck up there and back.... now! But, I should probably say you wouldn't want to drive a truck with an unknown history and no guarantee for any length. Alex stood behind the truck, and said he's only had three that never made it, two he replaced and one he fixed. So, it helps buying from a reputable source.

<font color="green">[3]<font face="Comic Sans MS">Funny story about driving the unknown. I have a friend that buys up most of the deuces her in the south. Last year he bought 3 deuces from a GSA auction in Mississippi. He loaded up one oh his mutants (employees) in his single axle mack wrecker and headed towards MS. When he got there they started working on getting one truck running. After 2 hours they got the best looking truck running. Pleased with themselves they went to move it and found out, it has no mastercylinder. Bummer, on to the next truck. Another hour or so and they had it running. Before they worked on it the checked the brakes. Finally! Swapped out whatever was necessary from the other trucks. Now he takes the worst of 3 trucks and chops it in half right behind the cab. Loads half into the running deuce and the other half into the brakeless deuce. Loads the brakeless deuce behind the mack and they take off for FL. The mutant is now behind the wheel of the deuce. After about 3 minutes on the road, the old top shreds to a million pieces. One more stop at the local Walmart to get sunscreen and a rainsuit. Off the go! It took them a day and a half to get bakc to south FL. The running deuce wouldn't go a bit over 45 MPH. They stopped about 70 miles outside of home for a drink. When the mutant got back into the truck it was then that he noticed the tree branch under the gas pedal. Oh well, whats a half a day wasted driving a deuce!</font id="Comic Sans MS">[/3]</font id="green">

hey guys trucks is a M-109 oops and I live in upstate
new york I am a Diesel Engine repar um dude and
farm worker(vegy) the truck needs some body work
(doors)and its been turned in to a potato truck with some frame exts plus engine leks oil I was thinking
parts truck?

that's a tough call- as a diesel engine mechanic, if YOU think it's good as a parts truck that probably means it won't be an easy fix. I'd still take a crack at it though- is the shelter body gone now? How permanent are these frame extensions?

Speaking of M109 shop van bodies, does anybody want/need one? I have a friend here that has one and it will sell cheaply. I think one window is completely missing. He's in Ft Lauderdale. I have one in the side yard for storage.

Van body is gone, frame exts 5 mins with a torch
and there gone, inside of doors are tost all
seat stuff is tost, glass is bad
and Id like to say that its a 1952 reo motors
truck and has a working deep water fording kit,
as for turning it into parts maybe?
my max cost in cash is $2500 but if I can get it
runing and fixed up for about the same ok
IL ask the boss about it and work something out(
that means $$$ and can I leave it there for a bit)

If you're in upstate NY, you're reasonably close to Ken Kublo's Surplus, that's where we got our Deuce' from , he's just accross the PA line in Laurel Lake, check him out, if not for the truck itself, then for any parts you may need. Though, he's mostly got M35 series trucks, I did see a couple 109's and 49's there when I last visited
