There was one for auction on GL a few weeks ago! Its sold now! I believe it was in Louisiana.:drool:
The GL Hemtt was a M984 wrecker and sold for just under $25K.

From the pics posted, it was very rough. I know that these trucks don't show up available to us pieons, but that truck needed atleast $50K worth of work.

I disagree about the HEMTT wrecker repairs. If the motor and transmission are good, that truck will need about $25K in repairs/parts. I did not inspect it so I don't know what all is missing, but I went over the pics with a good friend who has built HEMTTs. He and I came to the same conclusion...about $25K. I have quite a bit of experience hunting down HEMTT parts as I have worked on a project to build an M978 fueler, owned the M977 mentioned in this thread, and also currently own an M983 tractor that needed a motor and some misc. parts (basically TLC). $25K ought to do it assuming the motor and transmission are good. If the motor is bad, figure at least an additional $5K and that assumes you get a take-out (and it is complete). If the transmission is bad, good luck finding a good one. You will probably have to get it rebuilt. If you go to Allison, figure at least $8K. Other shops might be able to rebuild it a little cheaper.

Bruce, here's my thinking on the matter and the reasoning behind my madness. Before it could ever get to GL it first had to be offered to every museum, police force, fire dept and Govt. agency that buys such stuff. A friend of mine has a museum and he is on this tier level of requisition. The truck would only cost them $500 unless it was deemed residue, and then it would cost MUCH less. Since they all passed on the truck it is most likely missing or has a damaged engine and/or transmission. And since the military uses 15W40 motor oil in the transmissions it is most likely toast anyway, they just don't last long on motor oil.

Could you restore it on the cheap, possibly, but I suspect that to build up a really good truck I really think the costs would be far higher and one might think. BTW, there are TWO LHS's available at that other level . . .

If an agency can't start a truck, they often bypass it. This truck definitely has had parts removed. Right off the bat, that will scare most agencies away. They want turn-key trucks. Example: a friend was inspecting at Mechanicsburg when an agency was recovering one of the first rebuilt M818s that came out. When something went wrong with the tractor as they were loading it, and the agency turned it down. It was nothing too major, but they turned it down. They don't want projects. My friend confirmed this because he spoke to the GL site manager and was told this.

Even if the HEMTT wrecker needs a motor, one can be had for around $5K plus shipping. I know that because I found a zero-mile rebuilt motor (pics attached) for $7,500 and that was delivered from CA to FL. I figure the guy who bought that wrecker will have $50K in it when it is fully operational. Will he have a 100 point restoration at that point? Probably not. Since none of us inspected, we are all speculating based upon the pictures. I did not inspect and would have done so (or my friend from FL would have inspected) if I wanted the truck. In the end, with my M983 HEMTT tractor project in the works, I could not invest $25K to have the truck sit for a few years longer.

This one must have fallen through the cracks. Last time I talked to the Oshkosh RESET guys, they were taking everything for their rebuild program. Trucks too far gone to be put back in service were being stripped for any and all usable parts.

Oh how I would love an M977 HEMTT :/. I'll have to settle for a deuce and buying a house for right now lol. Then maybe I can spring for the HEMTT

I know who bought it but until he says so, I ain't talking. To me a rebuilt engine is HEMTT porn, even though my engine runs great and burns almost no oil.

Big Bad Bruce hope the land was worth it . I don't think i will be finding you another Hemitt any time soon , but i under stand times are tuff for all of us . I sold my M38 w/w today and had my M819 and 6x6 jeep on Ebay so we gotta do what we gotta do . Your mv Bro Dave aua
