Ive searched around the archives for opinions on the durability this specific combo but no luck so far.

Its a 1993 M998 6.5L 3spd. It currently cycles and starts perfectly with the normal 2 minute afterglow cycling.

I'm wondering if this combo is weak and needing upgrade, or just fine/not a liability?

Boxes were made by Prestolite, LAU, Nartron, and KDS. The Prestolites are the originals, The Lau boxes are serious trouble and should be avoided at all costs, After that they were made by Nartron and KDS with mixed results.

Like Steve says, you want to look for the EESS series boxes. The easiest way to recognize them is they have a third smaller connector on their sides that's for a test box nobodies ever seen.

The KDS..S3 boxes have both threaded connectors with same clocking as all others, except
the S3...Nartrons....they put both connector key way 180 degree out....so if used, you'll have to
do some cable twisting.
