Need advice/help to repair screw holes on front window frame.

Hello, I'm looking for advice/help to repair my window frames screw hole for the roof rails.

Essentially, I want picture B to look like picture A. I want to be able to screw in and out the roof rails when needed. I'm not looking for a permanent solution for securing the roof rails (i.e. rivets) unless it's literally the last option. I've looked around the TM's and searched the internet and coming up with more frustration then answers.

So I'm asking the community for advice on how to proceed. If there is any fine bits of info like sizes, brands, prices, etc, please let me know.

For anyone curious, the truck is an '86 AM General HMMWV M998 with the 6.2l, 3spd.

I think what you are looking for is a well nut, they are rubber and have a brass threaded insert.
I am sure they are listed in the TM, and I am sure someone will chime in, lots of folks here willing to help.

While a wellnut is the correct part, i expanded the hole and installed a rivnut. Happy with the results.

I can’t believe you had to make the hole larger for a rivnut. Maybe you used a larger screw than a 10/32?

Now, you have your answer and the parts are on their way so - what about possibly downloading the TM (Technical Manual) for your truck now? Not being a jerk here. Just trying to help you see how those books will make you life easier and make you smarter in the future. The 24p (parts book) is a PDF like the others. Download it and maybe even do it on a desktop computer where you have a nice big screen. Open that PDF you just downloaded in Adobe Acrobat. Press the CTRL and the F keys together and you should be able to type in wellnut and that search box and it should find that part for you. It will show you where it is used and give you the military part number. Next time you will be able to do that for yourself.

A good example is that if you were looking for a "cab support bushing" it might not be named that (just like "wellnut" wouldn't be a normal thing to call that "gizmo") . Sometimes you just flip pages until you find the picture you need. Sometimes the index will get you close, then flip pages...

Funny enough, I have the TM's (-10, -20 [1-3], and -24p [1-2]) on PDF on my PC and did read through it. I just must've over looked it out of frustration. Plus, I didn't know the name of the nut to begin with. But thank you for the advice though!

That is how it works...
Sometimes you just can't find it.
Been there myself many times!

That is why this place is such a good source of information.

Yes, i used 1/4"-20. Did not have to expand much, or honesly just clean the hole.

We’re you able to get the twist out? I guess it should be were you able to get the twist in? My rails will not lay flat.

My rails did not lay flat either and had to move them around a bit and do some drilling. That also pushed me to use rivnuts instead as i was not trusting the rubber insert with the force the rails were applying to it.
