need generator help

my generator took a dump today i have a dual voltage one from a ftm on there i'm getting steady 24volt to the exciter wire when i first turn the power on it charges for about three sec then nothing does anyone know how the voltage reg on the gen works or where i can get one or where i can get a stock gen cheap near chi- nw indiana

i didnt want to run two separate things to give me 24 and 12 volt since it sucks so much power from the motor as it is .my friend is gonna lend me a gen till i can get mine fixed i want to try a regulator before i send it in to get rewound and new brushes put in it since it was brand new when i put it in about two years ago.just cant see it messing up that quick since they run at such a low rpm
