Need help finding acceptable parts

Need a new steering box and power steering pump for an 85 M1009. I have the TM and have found the CAGEC numbers but I'm having trouble finding which modern versions of the parts are acceptable for use. Which brands / companies for steering boxes and power steering pumps are acceptable to use and what are their part numbers?

Thank you!

I can't help much with a steering box since I rebuild mine or adjust them tight again. I know there's some good builders out there that make them for off road guys that should be put together right. I'd hate to box store one and end up with cheap parts inside. They're a good bit to change with the pitman arm to press off. I do buy pumps though from parts stores. I do swap the pressure valve and spring out of the original one. I get just the pump not the tank. You'll need the puller for the pulley which you'll need no matter what. Pumps are easy to swap out. I've only had one go bad of the many I've done over the years and it was right away. You could go with online but having a store to run to for a quick swap is faster. Look up parts for a 84 k5 blazer diesel and you'll find one.

I have the same experience as the post above.

The steering box is best rebuilt or adjusted. If that isn’t possible, look for companies that do the boxes for off road applications and contact them. I would not go with a parts store box. Junkyard or parts truck would probably be better results.

Are you sure it is power steering fluid? The engine oil cooler lines run over or near both. Plus, some trucks have the oil sample port above the steering box as well. I suggest spraying degreaser everywhere, getting the entire area clean and then see where the leaking is if any.

Yes I am certain. I am not a mechanic, but I have a diesel mechanic who's been in the business since the 70s who works on my vehicles. He has done exactly what you described and determined that the steering box and power steering pump need to be replaced

I bought my reman steering gear from advance auto, and it was "fine". It's not exactly a premium part, but it seems to work, and I haven't had any trouble with it.

My warning to you though, is when you replace the steering gear, fill the power steering pump and run some fluid through the new box and into a catch pan to flush out any particles still in the new steering gear. I had some metal that flushed out of mine, and it's just better to get it out so it doesn't recirculate.

Odd that you "need" both at the same time, almost like he's throwing parts at it while not knowing why.
