Just picked up an m38A1 and am interested in learning more about the old military Jeeps. Most everything works but has a very noisy transfer case. That will be my first project.
.
Welcome to the the outfit new guy from Minnesota! :)

Sounds to me like you have a running truck. That seems to be a common thing where pieces were cobbled together in the military - or after that when they were released to the civilian world. Nice well worn gears - and a new gear in the cluster will make a fuss. Worn bearings too are a possibility. Good news is that mechanical gear boxes are much easier to work on than a "slush box".

You might look around YouTube for videos about noisy transfer cases too.
Even a new out of the crate Willis Jeeps were noisy in the transfer case.

Be sure to post a few more pictures. Create your own thread to detail your fixing - or to gather more ideas from the guys as you investigate the noise.
