The reason the military changed was enhanced performance . when you change to super single tires all the tires run through the same track on teh duals the out side and inside duals are running on on the out side and inside track of the front tires, when pushing through soft surfaces that means you are displacing material with 3 tires rather than the one on each side like the singles do.

Good. I miss my old 1400's smooth ride, appearance and outstanding flotation on soft ground. The 395's have shown a tendency to gumball and leave me and the truck fighting to get out/loose from stuff that the 1400' floated over. YMMV, of course.

What size singles
If you run dual 11s in the rear you can run a 365 85 r 20 or 365/80/20 in the front. It is near equal height just really wide and available in XZL tread.

Civilian tire equal would be a 425 65 r 22.5 but not many threads other than road types. They do make an XZL pattern but they cost as much as the trucks do for a pair of them with wheels

Ignore all the explanations so far. The simple, straight answer is life is just one peter match after another and then we die. These old trucks are really great tools with which to play the game.
