Steel Soldiers now has a few new forums, read more about it at: New Munitions Forums!
@juanprado - Thank you for your replies. We are not planning to remove anything at this time, but honestly do not know since we only had the truck 2 days - so much to learn and decisions yet to make on how we want to setup and use this truck.I would be interested in the u channel protecting the rear fender wires if you remove.
Wow GP getting sloppy, usually every bit of radio stuff gets stripped out.
Power steering on these is a pain, you must follow the TM procedure to get the air out after repairs.
Big round thing is power steering remote reservoir. You have V belts so you will have the old design GM pump with integral reservoir.Looking at other HMMWVs on GovPlanet I see this big round thing:

This is our engine from above and we do not seem to have this part. Is it missing, or is our engine just different?

@NDT - Thank you for the reply. In another forum post I read that the owner need a 1900 PSI power steering pump. Would my HMMWV need the same?Big round thing is power steering remote reservoir. You have V belts so you will have the old design GM pump with integral reservoir.
@TOBASH - Thank you. I have a M1097R1 and did not see my model listed. Is my HMMWV compatible with one or more of the other manuals, and if so which one(s)?FYI, Technical manuals (TM’s) are free and downloadable at the top stickies and also in the TM forum of the website.
@TOBASH - Thank you. I will get the manuals and get reading. From the v-belts and three speed shifter you can start by looking up M998.
I found their website. They are in California and I am in Oregon so I won't be visiting them for this. Maybe they have parts I need so if they ship I will see.Your best source of information is RWH Retired War Horses. Former military mechanic and current civilian mechanic who works on many of these.
You misunderstood.@TOBASH - Thank you. I will get the manuals and get reading.

Seems this is a GM part power steering pump with different valving. Somewhere I read that the valving is done with bolts on the back of the pump and can change the PSI that way.
Probably air in the system... follow the procedure to bleed and purge air. Lot of hoses and such going on in that system with some trapped air.UPDATE: I added some ATF fluid to the resevoir on the power steering pump a couple nights ago - made a bloody mess overfilling it - and I was able to turn the steering wheel left and right. It sure does make a lot of noise though. Does the howling indicate a power steering pump issue?
I was kind of expecting to see some leaks / drips of the ground the next day but did not find any. Two days later and the I can still turn the steering wheel, it's just howling a lot when I do it.
@KKroger - Thanks for the tip. The TM I have does not show the power steering pump I have. Our HMMWV is the one with the reservoir on the pump / pulley assembly.Probably air in the system... follow the procedure to bleed and purge air. Look in the A2 Manual... that is typically the PS setup for the A2 trucks R1s are kind of mixmasters.@KKroger - Thanks for the tip. The TM I have does not show the power steering pump I have. Our HMMWV is the one with the reservoir on the pump / pulley assembly.
Your R1 would be the same for the basic and A1 trucks if it has the reservoir on the pump as far as the steering goes.Probably air in the system... follow the procedure to bleed and purge air. Lot of hoses and such going on in that system with some trapped air.
