New M1009 in Spain (my hulk)

As a child it was to see my first blazer in the movie "commando" and to stay , after many years of searching I finally found a blazer (in my country it is very difficult to find this car) and above it was a CUCV here in me country, registered as a civilian, I could not believe it, I had bought a blazer, euphoria invaded me, a feeling of indescribable happiness.

I finally had a m1009 in my garage, so I registered in the forum and began to document myself like crazy, night and day, you are incredible, there is all kinds of information, from all possible fields.

The car is a 1986 m1009, the previous owner told me that it was working, but that was 12 years ago, since then it had never been started again, even so I did not care, I gave him the money and I take it home !!!




At home I started with the main thing, I disassembled the fuel tank protector to drop it, extract the diesel that was about 12 years old and clean the fuel tank (in and out), the fuel sending unit, and the lines and I did.

After putting the fuel tank back, I put new diesel, put new batteries with more than 800cc, change the oil and put Shell rimula 15w40, antifreeze 50/50, square filter of fuel wix and oil filter fram.

I opened the door I got on my beloved 1009, I turned the key until the batteries were exhausted with the fuel filter pouring diesel into a bottle and I did not start, at that moment I sent a private message to CUCVRUS asking for help, since each comment and each job What I read and saw in the forum I was doing, I was more impressed. I asked him for help and without hesitation he lent it to me and even today he continues to help me thousands of kilometers away.

We continue to narrate the project, after writing to @cucvrus he answered me and offered to help me selflessly, in an incredible way.

So with your help and instructions I got to work, making the first check, we had a possible candidate so the m1009 did not start, the glow plugs, I started to extract them, 7 were out but 1, did not come out, I tried I tried, but I had the famous symptom of a dilated head or mushroom, the one that did not come out was the one that was under the cold advance sensor, what a wonder !!!!! LOL. then cucvrus told me how to proceed, removing the battery support, wheel arch and easy and complete access to the damn glow plug. It was also used to paint wheel arch and battery supports.



patiently, following his instructions and the appropriate tool, the glow plug was out. now it was time to do the work in reverse.

With the 8 new glow plugs already installed, exactly bosch duratherm 80034 installed, I started it and the motor turned and turned but did not start.

With a bittersweet feeling, like anger, I thought that that was not the way and I started with the instrument panel of the m1009 since it looked like this.



carefully remove the upper metal plate, the gear indicator plate, the gen 1, gen2,4x4 and oil plastics, clean everything with degreaser, sand the upper plate completely, the gear indicator, remove the spring remove I sanded the plastic rod, covering the letters with painter's tape, once the metal pieces had been sanded, I gave them several layers of black paint. Clean them with the speedometer and fuel tank gauge, clean the fuel gauge connections with a spray of electrical connectors and fine-grained sandpaper to remove traces of rust.


I cleaned the soft plastic of the instrument panel and reassembled it, looking like this.

Fun times. You are doing great work. That makes you a great student and an excellent mechanic. I am here to help anytime. I don't know everything and many things I leave up to someone that does. I don't want any half fast work and guessing going on. I will save money on groceries but vehicles must be safe and reliable. I like things once and done. Why do people think they are saving money doing things on the cheap? Keep going it looks Great. I will get that fuel pump.

we continue with the m1009. After installing the new glow plugs, we reinstalled everything in its place, the wheel arch, batteries ..... we checked that 12v reaches the pink cable of the IP, I followed the instructions that @cucvrus told me we give you to start and the engine turns but the car does not smoke, we check everything again, we open the fuel filter screw until all the air comes out, we give it to start and it continues without smoking .......



we go to the next step we open the Injector pipes to see if diesel comes out and not a drop, so we come to the conclusion that the IP is dead.

We remove the oil filler pipe, and we can see the 3 internal screws that hold the IP to the pulley.



remove the three screws, carefully do not fall into the interior, the way is to remove one, turn the engine at stop, with a 24mm wrench and remove another, like this with the three and then disconnect the throttle cable and remove the three nuts from the pump bracket on top of motor. IP out.




now we send it to rebuild a known firefighter in my city.

You are doing great. Make sure to remove the glow plugs while you are priming the new injection pump. While you are waiting double check and replace all rubber fuel lines. Good Luck. Wow !!! You are really fast !!! You need to inspect the IP rotor for any rust from sitting, otherwise these pumps are very robust.Lots of experts here and Rick (cucvrus) is one of the good ones !!!

It has been a difficult few days and we have not had time for much, pieces were arriving from rockauto, so we got to work.

The temperature sensor that controls the glow plug was changed, as well as its connector and a universal one was put on, both were 40 years old, they are not very expensive parts and since it is disassembled, everything is worth changing.

We clean the intake manifold with industrial degreaser, a brush and hot water, wash it a few times, rub hard and look at the difference.





As it looked good, but not PRETTY, I gave it several coats of light gray anti-heat paint, and now it is beautiful.



You cannot have a nice intake and have an air filter with 40 years, which is what you see when you lift the hood, so the filter was sanded several times and several layers of matt anti-heat paint were given,





We disassemble the roof, to get to work with the interior until they send us the IP and the repaired injectors.
