The plates started out as 1/4" thick 12" gussets. They were cut to get around the spring hangers. The bolts are 3/8".
Those look like tractor ball ends for the three point hitch. Cat O ends have a 5/8" hole, the same as the bolt on the trailer to tongue. One issue with them is that they are not sealed and can freeze up if not used regularly. On tractors we do not lube them. For this application I would add a grease fitting.
Our original idea was to use the ball ends but we went the heim joints after analyzing the load paths and looking at the lubrication issue.
