I just got this back rest and it is a much different construction than the one I removed from my M49A1 ring mount.

It is NOS and has two labels on it.
One is dated 1/58 and the other dated 5/53.
It's made of a dense, rubbery, non-porous cushion material that is bonded directly to the steel backing plate.
Not like the others where there is a foam cushion inside the canvas or vinyl cover which then gets inserted and snapped onto the steel backing plate.
The plate is identical to my other one, which is the same as the ones the OP put up.

I am assuming this is a WWII era (or close to) construction.
Has anyone seen what kind of (canvas?) cover would go over this?
I doubt it would mount without one.

Any thoughts?
