New to me 1968 deuce

Well finally got a chance to mess with the truck for the first time tonight and I don't have any air brakes. When I push the pedal it goes almost to the floor and air pushes out what I believe to be a check valve. I'm assuming the check valve should only release when you let off the brake pedal? I'm not a mechanic so please bare with me. I'll add a picture

I have no idea, the title says 'white'. Where on the truck would it say?
