Just match your engine nummber on the valve cover to the number on the engine to the number on the lower block flange

Just to introduce another layer of confusion and uncertainty.

Bolts don't look molested though so yeah - probably a 1999 production engine. The engine on my 2008 was made in 2008 but maybe in the earlier years they had engines sitting around for a while before use? I don't have any statistics on that unfortunately. We will have to survey members.

There are warehouses full of motors. They are built in clusters throughout a year by the military as part of IROAN. If the military did any work to the engine internally to rebuild it will have tag on the engine itself. I.e. main, rod, piston sizes. The original tag will remain on the VC.

Almost every truck I've seen up to 2004 has had a pre 06/2000 engine in it

I purchased my truck in 2015 with only 4,500 miles on it. It now has a little over 10,000 miles on it so I’m praying that if problems haven’t shown up so far that I was lucky to get a good motor. I already replaced the transmission years ago.
