Advice on bidding would be don't bid unless you are ready for a possible project. The DRMO gensets are let go for a reason. It might be as simple as they were replaced with newer units or as complicated as it locked up and has sand in the oil pan. 90% of them (from my experience) have minor issues. Of the other 10%, some are obviously basket cases.

If you like to tinker or think a 4 cylinder air cooled Diesel motor is a cool thing, then you might consider bidding. You may get an 003A that only needs fuel, filters, battery, and oil. Or, you may get one that needs a new gen head. It is a gamble.

If you just want something that runs your house then you should consider buying a unit that is known to run and produce power.

You can throw down $1000 and roll the dice or maybe pay around $2500 (or more) for a sure thing. If you price new Diesel powered units that will power your whole house you'll find that $3000 is a great bargain and $1000 is akin to felony theft.

Also, military generators (except the new ones) are LOUD! Take this into consideration and listen to one before you drag one home and put it outside your bedroom window.

Derf does make some good points, if you play the odds in GL roulette you have a slight chance of getting a fully functioning generator, a somewhat larger slight chance of getting a generator that is functional for your needs (may have broken panel gauges, or similar problems that does not keep you from using it), but the most common situation is a generator that needs some minor to moderate repair ranging from a voltage regulator needing a new transistor or diode to an injection pump that is seized and needs rebuild/replacement, then there is that slight chance at the other end of the spectrum of buying a uneconomical to repair paperweight, with luck even then you can sell enough parts off of it to break even or only loose a little on your investment. Sometimes these moderate repairs may cost as much or more than you paid for the generator, this does not make it a bad value, a $1,200 MEP-003a that needs a $350 injection pump and a couple of $100 fuel pumps is still cheaper than buying a 3rd party "running" MEP-003a priced at $2,999.
