Newbie here, first time post from a first time MV owner. After many years of wanting and searching I recently purchased a M35A2 from a private seller locally (near me). It has the winch, good cargo bows and cover, and is in over all really good condition as far as I can tell. It has the LDT-465-C “whistler” and the air shift transfer case and starts, runs, and drives good or at least it did before I started pulling out all the interior and refinishing/restoring all the bits and pieces. I just can’t leave well enough alone.

My question regards the vehicle’s history and in particular the original year of manufacture. I have searched the SS forum extensively and am well aware that the great CARNAC can no longer provide vehicle “look ups”. I am also aware of David Doyle’s research and article located here:

http://www.militarytrader.com/milit...jeep_and_am_general_2_12-ton_truck_production

My vehicle is VIN number 0125-19756 with hood number 4H-4820. Clearly it was manufactured by Kaiser Jeep in the mid 1960s. My dash data plate appears to have been changed somewhere along the way presumably when it was upgraded from the original M35 or M35A1 configuration to the current M35A2 configuration. (It definitely has the old style 25A front wiring harness that was upgraded to the 60A alternator. I have a NOS “new style” wiring harness (NSN 2590-01-016-3187 Part # 11677081) that I will be changing out during the restoration.) The replacement dash data plate that was put in (presumably during the A2 upgrade) was hand etched not stamped. As in. with one of those freehand pencil etchers it appears. The Identification NO. = “4H-4820 Kaiser Jeep” and the Contract NO. = “0125-19756 1964”. Clearly the information was etched in the wrong boxes. The VIN (0125-19756) matches the frame number on the left front and the hood number (4H-4820) matches the spray painted number on the inside of the driver’s door. No hood number under/on the actual hood. The vehicle has a clear MS title but has a manufacture date of 1964 listed based on the hand etched replacement data plate on the dash.

I do not believe the year of manufacture was actually 1964 but rather either late 1965 or early 1966. I am basing this off what I have summarized searching CARNAC’s posts of “0125-XXXXX” vehicles and reading of David Doyle’s information linked above. After searching and searching the SS forums I pieced together the following info:

VIN # Hood # Year
0125-11947 4G-5903 1965
0125-12161 4G-6118 1965
0125-12692 4G-6639 1965
0125-13746 4G-7559 1965 (thtrev2001’s)
0125-18578 4H-3227 1966 (RDUKW’s)
0125-19756 4H-4820 196? (mine)
0125-20400 4H-5604 1965 (bc35339’s)
0125-21674 4H-6836 1966 (OldDominionIron’s)
0125-22375 4H-7537 1966
0125-23043 4H-8350 1966
0125-23106 4H-8413 1966
0125-26943 4J-2743 1966
0125-27232 4J-3104 1967
0125-28548 4J-4309 1967
0125-30249 4K-5422 1967
0125-30955 4K-5944 1967
0125-30957 4K-5947 1967
0125-31301 4K-6219 1967
0125-32948 4K-7618 1967
0125-32953 4K-7623 1967
0125-33415 4K-8085 1967
0125-34271 4K-8941 1967
0125-34494 4K-9164 1967
0125-35736 4L-0407 1968
0125-36424 4L-1095 1968
0125-36490 4L-1161 1968
0125-36575 4L-1246 1968
0125-36582 4L-1253 1968

My conundrum essentially revolves around the fact that something seems amiss in the vehicles around late 1965 and early 1966. It would seem that sequentially either RDUKW’s (0125-18578 4H-3227) should actually be a 1965 or bc35339’s (0125-20400 4H-5604) should be a 1966. Sequentially, mine (0125-19756 4H-4820) is right in the middle thus I’m not believing the 1964 on the title and hand etched data plate but don’t know if it is really supposed to be 1965 or 1966.

Does anyone know what the VIN/Hood # break was between 1965 and 1966? Does anyone else have a VIN/Hood # between RDUKW’s (0125-18578 4H-3227) and bc35339’s (0125-20400 4H-5604) that could help me narrow it down? Does anyone know what the contract number was for these 0125-XXXXX M35s and when that contract was issued and when the manufacturing actually started and ended on that series of M35s? Lastly, I don’t suppose anyone else (besides CARNAC) can assist in the vehicle history of my particular M35A2 (0125-19756 4H-4820) as in what unit(s), locations, etc.?

Thanks,
Chuck

I ended up using the lot number to determine the year of my m109

The term “lot number” will be used to describe the first two digits of the VIN.
“01” lot designator was used throughout 1966 and into the early part of 1967. These trucks were built by Kaiser-Jeep, as were lots 02 and 03.
