Newbie with some WMO

I just did my first oil change (crossing my fingers that I didnt jack it up) and would like to just burn it with some diesel but I have no idea where to start on the filtering, if thats even a good idea. I have no experience with all these fancy setups/stills you guys have. Anyone have a good simple method for small-scale filtration? I dont have a shop/man sanctuary where I can setup some big pumps/55 gal drums. Thanks

Just dump it in your fuel tank and carry spare filters.

Use a piece of an old pair of jeans as a filter. Pour the oil through the material and it will catch most of what you want to catch. I keep a set of fuel filters in the cab with me "just in case" but so far, she has not left me stranded. I burn alot of WMO in my deuce with no issues.

If its straight from the truck black gold, you can get away with just caring a set of extra filters. Read the post that are all over this subject and spend some time and money a good filter setup to handle large volumes of UMO if its available to you.

As a Noob Deuce owner I have been reading the posts on this and feel I am in the same boat as you. I am wanting to change the oil, but before I do I want to better understand the re-using of the UMO and the filtering of it, the replies here have been helpful. Regarding the filters, did you purchase them online from a military parts site or did you find an equivalent part say at Autozone or O' Reilly's if that is even possible. Thanks.

I invested in a centrifical filter to filter my WMO, and am glad I did.
I sill have not gone through the tank of Diesel that came with my truck.
But my friends are burning through the oil as fast as I can filter it.
They are running straight filtered WMO in their Deuces and have not had any problems.

as an alternative to filtering, if you fill a 55 gal drum and let it sit for a couple of days in the sun, most solids should fall to the bottem. Then draw you used motor oil out about 3-5" from the bottom of the barrel.

My oil sits several days to a week before it gets filtered and I get very little crud in my filter, but I like the piece of mind I get with filtering the oil.

Looking at your avatar (someone on a C-130 wing), are you an Eng or Crew chief? I am an ex-C-130E Flight Engineer (14 missions in Iraq/Afganistan, 2003/04).

You need to mix some diesel or reg gasoline in with it to thin it down.....straight motor can lead to coking up the injectors. I run 50/50 UMO and gasoline or 30 WMO/30 VEGGIE/40 Gasoline....the dueces love it.

i just changed my oil, poured it straight into the tank, added 5 gallons of gas, and 15 gallons of diesel and called it a day.

Yes, but the color can get you in trouble. Also, I would highly recommend anyone burning any amount of anything other than pump supplied fuel, look into getting a license from your state. It is usually free, self regulated, and if you do happen to get pulled and your tank dipped, all you have to do is show a copy of the license (you are supposed to photo copy it and put it in each truck you burn stuff in) you won't be fined big $$$$. That free fuel can wind up costing you. There are benifits, you can now burn ATF and off road as long as you claim it on your monthly reports. (again, self regulated)

I run 80 - 90 percect used motor oil in the deuce and 50 percent mixed with diesel in my boat with twin 3126 cat 420 hp each for over two years filtered through 2 15 micron absolute filters. Have ran thousands of gallons with no problems at all.

I worry about just pooring crap into my tank... or about "carrying spare filters" because fuel shouldn't be so dirty that it causes extra work. Or my truck to stop working! Rather than running crap in my 5 ton, I'd prefer to filter the crap out first before putting it in my baby. I first "strain" it through a piece of cloth, to get the big stuff out, then a coffee filter. After that I have a setup rigged where I pour it into a 5 Micron filter, it goes through a series of plastic pipes and fittings down to a 1 micron filter in a custom housing I bought, and down to a valved hose to pour into jerry cans.

It doesn't come out clean, but its certainly not the typical black used oil color anymore after that. it's got a hint of gold and transparency to it.

I have not used gear oil. I should work at about 25 percent with diesel
mixed.

I've cleaned a few pints of gear oil and tossed it in. It might add to the stinky, but in small doses its not a problem. If you start running large quantities, is the time to worry. The fuel then would be much thicker and harder on the parts that pump it, at that point.

How about with the M35A3? With the Cat 3116. It's not a multi fuel, correct? I was looking on line at VoilPower about adding a system to alternate between diesel and veggi oil. There's videos on youtube with a 3116 done. Anyone have any ideas. I should be able to find used veggi oil in Vegas, with all the casino's and restaurants in town. I keep looking at my truck on line at GL and can't wait to hook up with Ferroequinologist and pick up my new son. By the way I have no kids so this will be able to occupy most of my time.

Any information about the technical name of the license, or how to obtain them? I understand it would vary state to state, but would starting at the BMV or local PD be appropriate? I have a feeling that the local representatives will have no idea what I am asking about!
