At 8000' these motors are probably down to half their rated power. These huge non-turboed motors lose massive amounts of power at high altitude.

oops I posted same time as the Chief.

Is there a general chart for power % versus altitude for naturally aspirated diesel engines? It is interesting to compare, if there is data.

The only one I have is this cheezy one, made from generator set ratings and one gasoline engine rating.

I pulled a trailer loaded with round hay bales probibly around 35 or 40,000 lbs and had to drop into 3rd several times on small hills, but I hear its normal, averaged around 45 mph, a little fusterating but I got where i was going .

Thanks for all the helpful input here Gentlemen. I experience the lug here in Utah climbing steep hills at 7000+ elevation. It ran much better in Barstow during my recovery with my brakes dragging. I thought something was going wrong and kept checking things. I bought a brand new turbo from an SS member, but will expect to blow much more than $1000 to get everything including the 5" exhaust I have been advised to get with it. This 923A0 converted A1 gets me down the road much better than the old M35A2, but the gearing and the NA do make it a dog on the hills. I will try the 5th low advice next outing. Anxious to see the effects on the EGT's and the performance at altitude with the turbo. Not expecting a lot, just want to help the old girl breathe the thin air better. I already enjoy this truck as is.
