no start clicking under dash

My CUCV 1986 will not start. There is a strong click from under the dash. Batteries are new and full. Any Ideas ?

If it's a stock electrical system check the relay under the dash...it may be stuck or about to be...beware that it may stick on and keep turning over the engine until the batteries die or it catches fire if it starts...search here for doghead mod it'll show where the relay is.

Yes, the doghead mod threads will tell you a lot about it. Check the "Helpful Threads" sticky at the top of the forum. They are listed there.

BUT, you don't need to do the doghead mod. Any quality 30 amp automotive relay will do the job just fine. That relay only draws 9 amps.

Or you can order an exact replacement, but I think you are better off with a modern relay. Holler if you need help wiring it up.

It isn't the current which kills starter relays, it is the back current which arcs contacts to an early grave. The current flowing through a solenoid coil creates a magnetic field. When that current is interrupted, the collapse in the magnetic field causes a reverse current, much stronger than the original. The original starter solenoid has a small diode which is supposed to stop this back current. But age and repeated use can cause it to fail open, allowing the back current to arc weld the contacts. This failed diode has no symptoms. Caveat detonator. Watch out for things that go boom.

Check all connections at batteries and starter. Even though batteries are new load test them. Starter or starter solenoid may be bad. Remove starter and have it checked. Report back.
