Noob from CT that wants a 5 ton

Hey fellas looking to pick up a 5 ton.I have been doing a lot of reading but nothing definitive so I hope you guys could help me out.
What is the deal with registering one here? do I need a CDL?Just wondering how to go about this.Thanks for any help

Hi. I live in Ct as well. I own a M923a2 so, I can probably answer your question. Connecticut sucks! As you know, just registering a car here is a tedious job. When I bought my truck in 2015 it took 3 trips to the DMV in old saybrook at 3-5 hours each time. And, that's with showing up before it opened. Here are some tips to help you thru the process...
1. Get the VIN verified a local emissions place first. how? You can't drive it without plates! Oh.. go back to the DMV and get a temporary commercial plate! Because they have no idea what to do with the truck!
2. If you have a SF-97 form, keep that in your pocket and do not show them that! They will look at the GVW and, send you to a licensed truck inspection place we to make sure it's road worthy. Just bring a bill of sale and, keep the GVW on your registration form blank! Or O.
3. Prepare to write a letter to the commissioner of the DMV explaining that the truck will NOT be used for commercial purposes. Get that notarized!
4. Go back and find out that your missing some other piece of paper 2 more times.
5. They will put the plates on the counter and, just as you think you are walking out to put them on the truck... they call over a supervisor to tell you that you need to call the DOT to get a waiver.

Good luck! Oh... btw... drive north to VT or Maine. Register there. Way easier!

CDL depends on your state, check your DMV and look for exceptions to CDL requirement. Here in Fl it is not required, I drive my M923A2 all over the state going to events.

If you don't use it for a commercial purpose (for payment) you do not need a CDL. I suggest you buy one already titled in another state. There may be lots of hidden problems when buying from a few small photo's on GP that seeing it first hand can avoid.

I would rather purchase one ftf so I could check it out but people seem to want a lot more money for about the same truck that GP auctions them for.I watched a nice 5 ton tractor sell the other day for $4500 that was fairly close to me.Wish I grabbed it but I'm still learning

If you indeed register the truck as a "recreation vehicle " in CT, you do not need a CDL. I have " classic vehicle " tags on mine.

That is an interesting and dangerous statement. These auctions are a crap shoot. Even if a truck is inspected it could be damaged after the purchase or items removed. As anyone can attest on this site the auction trucks are not the cheapest. Maybe you will be lucky and get a good running one but you could also get a major lemon. If you are going to play the auction game beware, you will get burned sooner or later.

Even if the initial price seems lower look at all the other costs

1.) Auction fees
2.) Transport
3.) Oh **** items
4.) Sales Tax

You can easily add $1000.00 to the price of any truck you purchase at auction versus a private seller

I think you will find that you have to pay for quality, be it on the auction or with a private individual.

Patience pays off. Having cash at an opportune time is important. If you are a gambler, go for the auction. I think the same addiction exists with the auction as does a gambling casino. So do you feel lucky?
