From looking back at the TM I think this should be right:
5937387 AND 12342643-1(early 242)

2520013575044 rear shaft for early 242 with 3 speed
2520014590050 rear shaft for late 242 with 3 speed
2520014132724 rear shaft for late 242 with 4 speed
2520014240425 rear shaft for late 242 with 4 speed and 1350 rear diff ujoint
2520013575043 rear part of front shaft for both 242 with 3 speed
2520014130080 rear part of front shaft for both 242 with 4 speed

I'll go over this today/tonight. I'd like to get the parts and get this job done and buttoned up soonest.

RWH mentioned "UOC" which is also helpful, but we're talking apples and oranges here.

A 1992 M1038 came with an NP218 T/C.

If you plug in a later model NP242 T/C, all bets are off on which shafts go with what (or I haven't been at this long enough to know how to use the several thousand pages of manuals, parts and maintenance combined).

Again, I'm thinking if DoD had a memo about this, or even a preventive maintenance cartoon someone, somewhere, somebody would, could, should have it tucked away in their computer somewhere or TM section of their bookshelf.

The 242 upgrade is part of an upgrade kit...includes the Tcase lamp, wire harness,drive shafts etc....

thats the late style Tcase, so you will need the new rear drive shaft that has the larger spline count, you will need a new rear diff yoke for the larger U-joints on that shaft. You will need a new Mid-shaft, you don't need a front drive shaft.
you will need new Straps and bolts for tcase and diff yoke.

A phone call to anyone of the major distributors and tell them what you are doing and what Tcase you have, they can set you right up. I can bet you that you won't find the correct mid-shaft except at the distributor, epay only seems to have the old 218 models.

Thanks. I DID that, but on a different search engine. I haven't used google for searches in years. Got tired of it feeding me bogus headlines/suggested threads and irrelevant links - especially for things political (last year, I did a search for "Hillary Clinton is" on a handful of major search engines and the results were amazing).
Anyway, I just did this search on my work computer and yeah, first hit.
Looks like I'll need to call someone about this for sure.

Meanwhile, anyone think of making this a sticky? Saving it somewhere on this site? Or am I using the site's search engine wrong?

At the tcase...the pic of yours shows it's missing, 86humv has them.

Only if he gets an actual 12k shaft, the others have the smaller u joint for the rear diff yoke.

Yes and no...you have to have new straps for the output yoke on the TCASE, they are not the same as the 218.

You want the -0050 rear drive shaft...32 spline, small u-joints 10.3k

I have 2 ea. new...
12342618..Mid shaft to T/C 242
919588-2403...rear, T/C242 to diff with 1330 yoke.
Straps for T/C 242
And I have the T/C lever.

Got parts on order (thanks to 86Humv).

Another question, this one regarding the adapter assembly, pu NSN 2520011757220 listed as part #1 on page 103-1 for my truck M1038 (UOC H14).

The part is ALSO listed as NSN 2520014641774 for other models.
What I've got now is the first, bolted between my 3L80 xmission and NP218 TC while the NP242 I'm installing has the second part listed.

Which adapter assembly do I use? The one that's on the NP242 now (the second listed) or the original?

As I read the removal/assembly instructions from TM 9-2320-280-34 I'm supposed to remove the TC from the adapter (which makes sense, as there's a "Mount, resiliant" bolted up to the one on the xmission NOW.

Do I reuse that or replace with the newer part?

I'll need to order some lockwashers.

And is Permatex 82180 Ultra Black Maximum Oil Resistance RTV okay for sealing the flanges? The stuff that's on there now is thick, sticky/gummy, a little hard to take off and seems to attract bees.

So keep the mount that's on the truck now, pull the mount off the 242?

If it is different, then its for the 4L80e....and those are available cheap all over.
