For our operation at the SSGR (and since we are not coordinating with any law enforcement agencies or emergency operations centers, I agree that we don't need a directed net. I was just throwing it out there as an option.

I've been an ARES/RACES member for the last 11 years. We have directed net training every Monday night. One night per month, the directed net is operated on simplex. During Hurricanes Charley and Frances, I worked the duration of the storm in shelters. We maintained a directed net, but it was quiet most of the time. During the quiet time, net control called shelter operators every hour requesting a sitrep. If nothing changed from the previous hour, my report consisted of two words: "no change".

I've heard them like this.
XM818 is the tactical call
This XM818 KE5EUA, Go head Sir

Another Idea could be if on a trailride both 51 MHz and 146.5 are being used you could have somebody with both types of radios repeating the message from the other frequency to the other if it was a important message.

What about cross banding 6 and 2 meters?

Tactical calls are nice I've just done events where all that was used was the tactical call and you had no idea who was actually talking if listening in on the repeater.

I'm sure it will be ironed out the first day.

I'm going to bring my PRC-77 just to see if it works. If someone would help me find out if it transmits as well as receives I would appreciate it.
Step 1: place toes on tip of the antenna
Step 2: key up
Step 3: do the funky chicken

I would never ask anyone to do something I haven't done myself.

I was tuning a cb antenna to use on 6 meters and wasn't paying attention when I set it down. Accidentally keyed the radio and put 100 watts into my big toe.

Not that simple in my case. My radio has some interesting issues that I don't understand, just need someone who knows them well to look at it and tell me what the deal is.

Jeepsinker, I'll be bringing a pair of them. One in a manpack in the M151A2 and one mounted in an AM2060 veh. mount in the Land Rover. I think the AM2060 amp crapped the bed though. :shrugs: :)

Does anyone have a mag mount 2meter antenna I can borrow during the rally? If I can borrow one, I will bring my 2m mobile rig, mounted in the M37. I am already going to bring two Icom HT's

Unfortunately, I cannot attend the rally. I have to support an upcoming project at work, and I'm unable to take vacation that week. :-( :x

I'm bringing one as well that I won't need during the rally JP.

Sounds like a blast and wish I could be there. I still fire up my old Kenwood TS-520S from time to time.
