Oil capacity?

93 M35a3.
Changed the oil/filter for the 1st time on my truck.
Napa 1971 Filter and started with 19 qts Rotella 15w40.
Started and ran for 10 minutes. The oil appears overfilled. 1" above full mark on the dipstick.
I used 5 fresh 1 gallon containers with 1 qt left.
I am wondering if there is a specific part # for my oil dipstick that might be stamped on the dipstick.
Maybe the wrong dipstick? When I bought the truck I checked the oil level and it was right at the full mark.
The placard on the dash says crankcase capacity 19 qts. Not sure if that includes the filter.
I've got 19 qts in it and it's overfilled according to my dipstick.
Any thoughts from the troops?

p.s. I own an oil change facility.

The lube order says 18 without filter and 19 with filter.

Thanks.
I added 19 qts w/ a new filter and it's overfilled according to the dipstick.
Would you search for a part # on the dipstick?

Again, Thanks.

Interesting stuff here, Not the first discussion on this.
https://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?94838-A3-TM-Oil-capacity-Says-19-quarts

It has one oil filter and one drain plug and gets level checked a minute after shutdown.
A bit different than a multifuel where all the oil comes out when it is drained.
Apparently this engine can retain two quarts of oil. To fill it up from a dry crankcase it is 21 quarts and for a normal oil change is 19 quarts with the filter. Does that imply that it is "slow to drain"?

see the thread noted above in which comments indicate the attached lube table is incorrect. Is the engine a cat 3116?
Borrow somebodies else's like-engined dipstick for a few minutes.

Does the NAPA oil filter hold as much oil as the 1R0739 - LPF3191?

Thanks Frank:
Not many MVs in my area.
There is no part# on my gauge rod cap, liquid. It definitely has 19 qts in it.
I let it drain for 20 minutes after an hour long drive.
It currently reads 1" above the full mark. Probably let it be.
Thanks to all for the responses and advice.

Borrow somebodies else's gage rod-cap, liquid and check your crankcase level.

Or just drain all the oil out and measure it, mark your buckets in gallons first so you can measure it. How long did you let it drain and was it at running temperature first?

Good question re: the oil cooler. I'll have to look.
Would the oil cooler and lines drain during a routine oil and filter change.
I recall reading somewhere that initial fill on a new engine would be 21 qts.
The 19 qts would be capacity after that. Perhaps the 2 qts difference would be the
capacity of the oil remaining in the cooling system.
Drain time 20 minutes after an hour drive time.
If you look, carefully, at the bracket that holds my "Gauge rod cap, liquid" assembly in place it would appear
that at some point in time either the bracket or assembly have been altered.

Just a quick thought. Do you still have an oil cooler or did someone remove it? To tack on to Frank8003's question How long did you let it drain and was it at operating temp?

Looks to me like the clamp that supports it just has moved some.

Should not affect the accuracy.

I agree, although I the clamp is tight.
I'm within an inch of the full mark.
Confident in the fact that it has 19 qts in the crankcase I'm going to let it be.
Moving on to a new steering wheel. The old one looks to be pretty content on staying put.
Anyone know what these letters on the inside of my glove box mean?

Thanks again to all.

Do they match the registration number on your data tag

On and off for daze thinking about a perceived crankcase oil level predicament.

So I looking at a probable miss-aligned oil dipstick bracket and CAT 3116 engine owners questions of what the heck is the real crankcase level and is it proper or NOT?

So I see something in my magazine to present for conjecture.
This is about CAT 3116 engines when installed in a boat. Those engines have a much larger capacity crankcase so the "level" differences would get doubled?

Engine Oil Level Gauge Calibration on Caterpillar 3116 & 3126 Marine Engines
These have twice the crankcase capacity of your truck engine

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information concerning the engine oil level gauge calibration for Caterpillar 3116 & 3126 marine engines. This information should be considered anytime one of these engines is removed and reinstalled in a marine application.

It should also be noted, a NEW engine is shipped with an engine oil level gauge that is not marked. The engine oil level gauge is not marked because the angle of installation can be different for each engine.

The angle of installation will affect the “ADD” mark (Y) and the “FULL” mark (X) that is engraved on the engine oil level gauge as shown below.

Oil Level Gauge (Y) “ADD” mark (X) “FULL” mark 90

So I was thinkin that if the oil dipstick tube itself had its own mounting retainer swapped for-an-aft or otherwise being not as it was designed to be then would that change the level as seen on a dipstick pull after engine shutdown?

I have now thoroughly confused myself and post this and give up.
