Oshkosh MK23 family of trucks parts

Hi,

I have a few parts for these trucks, like the tires and rims in the classifieds but I also needed some other parts. One part I need is the steering wheel cap. It honks the horn. So I called Oshkosh Defense and asked them "How can I get parts?" They said, "We are not supposed to talk to you but we have a dealer that may be able to assist you." So they told me about OVL and suggested that I call them.

I called OVL and after a while talked with the receptionist and she was nice. She listened to my story and then said, "Well, I think Lisa is the one that could help you." So she transferred me to Lisa and Lisa said that I needed to fill out some paperwork and send in some supporting docs and then I might be able to set up an account to purchase parts.

So I have sent everything in and now I am waiting to hear from Lisa. While I was speaking with her, I asked what other owners can do to get parts. She said that everyone needs to follow the same process. BTW, they can work off the NSN or the Oshkosh part number. I have a listing of the Oshkosh part number with a short description. So if you need parts for your MK23, MTVR, 7 Ton, then call Lisa and start to get set up. Here is her info:

The issue with the 7 ton trucks is that they were not built on a civilian truck variant so parts will be hard to come by. If I could get my hands on a parts manual I could put most of the part numbers in my system and let it work its magic and pull out civilian equivalents. Most of the air brake system parts will be easy to come by I just need a manual to let my system do its thing and I could start up a parts spreadsheet.

Wheels on the 7 ton I believe are equal to the PLS or HET wheels

The MTVR wheels are not anything like PLS/HET wheel. Pretty sure they are only MTVR fitment and nothing else.

Wes,

I can email you the list of MTVR part numbers I have. What format do you need it in? I mean like PDF or Excel. Also what order do you want the columns in, part number first, then NSN, then description?

I hope it works out with OVL. I am curious to hear if OVL will sell parts to civvies. My experience with similar things is that these companies won't. Many agree to sell only to the military or military contractors. There are CARC paint distributors, for example...their name escapes me right now...but I know they won't sell to us. This particular company sells CARC gallons, quarts, cans, roller bottles, and brush assemblies. It is the real stuff...real CARC. Not Gillespie.

Although I have only seen images so far, to me they are the same as most MRAP steel wheels: 20×10", two-part, 12-studded bolt-together wheels, 10-on-335mm bolt center, about 11" backspace.

I pretty well figured as well that any of the planetary hub type wheels would work. Being that the PLS and HET are both oshkosh products as well it would be stupid to make a totally different design for a 7 ton wheel. I am sure there are some similarities in the hubs.

Well, what they all have in common is that the hub diameter will always be limited to 280mm - as long as they wanted to stay with the most popular, industry standard truck wheel center. (281mm pilot hole; 335mm bolt circle.)

On the other hand, wheel backspace varies a lot, depending application - even within Oshkosh products. Like HET wheels, they have almost 13" of backspace!

The 7 ton NSN description list I got from the member here lists the wheel as NSN 2530 01 355 0639 accuride 29741 as being the same thing on an M1070 and PLS.

Maybe jon can verify with a number off those wheels he has.

Wes, I do know nothing about MTVRs...:-? But still, I suspect that's a mistake there, in that list...

Fact is, NSN 2530-01-0355-0639 is correct for the M1070 wheel assembly. (TM 9-2320-360-24P, Fig. 163; item #4). Maybe it's the same wheel as well for the later model PLS trucks.
But the MK23 MTVR wheel certainly looks different, regarding the relative position of the center vs. the rim. More like what I wrote in post #8.

Here are a few pics showing both wheels (w/o the cover), for comparison:

1) M1070 HET wheel:

2) MK23 MTVR wheel:

I want to find out if OVL will sell parts to civvies.
If they do, by law they MUST charge you more than they do the Federal Government. That extra can be anywhere from a penny per item up to many multiples of what they charged the F.G. per item. Depends on how much it cost them to deal with people only buying a few low (to them) cost items once a year or two vs. a multi million dollar contract, and whether they have any 'spares' available to sell in the retail market.

You can see that PLS/HET wheels have a more positive offset and 2 valve stems when compared to the MTVR wheel. I don't believe the MTVR wheel is currently being used in other applications. Now that doesn't mean that other wheels will or will not interchange with them, but backspacing is going to be the big factor here. Moving backspacing in will increase clearance where moving it out will likely cause rubbing or interference issues. The pictures show a clear difference in the wheels. I have one of each and they are just like what is in these pictures.

Sorry I am late posting this. I have a lot of junk going on . . . .

I have checked a few of my wheels and they are all basically the same even though I can see there are from different MK23 trucks.

gringeltaube is correct. My wheels are marked 20x10 and are 2 part. They have 12 bolts holding them together with 34 mm nuts. There are 10 holes for the bolts from the axle and two holes that I am told are for assisting you to line it up when placing the tire on the axle. There are TWO additional holes that are for the CTIS SYSTEM - for air pressure. On my rims, only one of the holes is ever used. So there is an extra air line hole that could be for the PLS/HET. There is an 11 inch offset.

I saw many numbers on the rim and many many warnings. Gosh, the military loves their warnings!

Some of the numbers on the rim are "05 09493 00" and "312 04 09 03 S3". It also says "TITAN EW USA". I expect some of the numbers to be a date code.

I have photos of all this and I will upload some.

RimMTVR_Air_Align.jpg

So the red arrows show the holes for the air pressure lines while the blue circles show the "alignment" holes.

I see that the formatting is not kept when pasting so my last post is a mess.

Here are more photos of the MTVR rims.

Now, back to the actual subject of this thread, I did hear back from Lisa and she was able to find the part I need. I need the steering wheel cover which has the "OSHKOSH" logo and it is used to honk the horn. She was very helpful and she did some research to find the NSN because I did not have it and the part number list I have did not show that part. Anyway, she is able to sell me the part and all I need to do is submit a PO to the accounting department to get things rolling. She even offered to send a photo of the part before shipping so I can be certain that it is the part I need. There is only one little thing, the part is $105!!!!!!!!!! Now this is a little round thing maybe 2 inches in diameter and it is over one hundred dollars!! I think I should buy more MTVR parts on GP and stock up on them.

Maybe I will buy another truck and use it for parts. . . .

Jon
