Out With The New (Winch)...

My "modern" winch has been hanging off the front of my A1 for years and just bugging the dickens out of me... so I finally decided to at least put a period correct one on. I realize it's not the "correct" one but its close. Here are pics of the new going OUT:

And the test fit of the OLD one to go in. It's a Ramsey with the stock CJ5 low mount frame. Note my new metal cut to weld a custom rack together. The stock low mount is too wide for the A1 frame. But at least the winch will fit in a custom rack and in the A1 frame, barely. I'll post pics of my progress. The PTO will be fun as I'm putting it behind a Warn overdrive. I also have some ideas to "solve" the clocking issue with the PTO, exhaust, and other stuff in the way. We'll see if my ideas are bust or must.

Using an adapter. I have an original one (from Warn?) but I believe they are making reproductions as well.

The 8274 is my favorite electric winch. With that said the PTO winch does fit the bill better.

OK, I'll bite and show my ignorance. What does "baby level wind" mean?
Some of the military 20K and I think all of the 45K lb winches had level winder apparatus' on top, in order to lay the wire on the drum correctly as it was spooled in. They did this because the wire rope was so thick (5/8" and 3/4" I think) as to be unmanageable by hand.

The deuce 10K lb. winch never had these.

Apparently the military played around with the idea of level winders on the Jeeps, as a military picture of a level winder perched upon the top of a Jeep winch was featured in Army Motors a while back.

It's doubtful many, if any were actually made and I don't think anyone has actually seen one in the flesh.

Looks like a downgrade to me, as far as winches go. They've been making those old winches forever. Not period-correct enough for you?
Not only is the PTO more era correct (they never put an electric winch on a M38A1), but they are often stronger as well. It basically has as much power as your engine, which it runs off of. You can dangle the vehicle off a cliff, and pull it up to safety on the PTO.

I guess you just put a regular fairlead in front of the PTO winch? I have a 1952 M38A1 that I put a Ramsey 200L PTO winch on. With a little fabrication, it all fits (even behind my Saturn overdrive), but I don't have the military issue fairlead. I'm wondering if I'll have to fabricate it.
The military Ramsey 50 fairlead is almost exactly like the one you are using. I would have to study your set up for a few minutes to tell it was a later model.

Yours and the OP's look great and very correct.

Oh thanks, but I know what a PTO winches are, and how they work. Was only questioning the 'upgrade' because the 8274 is one of the best winches ever made. Would never-never-never trade one for a PTO winch, but that's just because I'm thinking more about winch performance than the restoration side of things. If you want to sell that one, shoot me a PM.
