Wow, what a fantastic bunch of guys here at Steel Soldiers - look at this fabulous response to my quest for some Milvee trip advice!
Ozzy, 99.9% percent of the folks on here are good folks and would give you the shirt off their backs and parts for your truck.

Here in the South we are known for "Southern Hospitality" but there are friendly folks all over the country.

My offer stands, if you want to drink real sweet tea, eat some grits and see how us southern folks live please plan a stop here.

We'll even throw a possum on the Barbie.

The only way your trip would be any better would be if you could be here for the 2014 SS GA RALLY in October.

It is the premier MV event in this part of the country. Last year we had over 100 trucks and a bunch of trailers and misc. equipment.

You can't have more fun without taking off your pants.:jumpin:

'Road Atlas'? Wassat, somesorta paper GPS? Let me know where your first stop in the US will be and I'll have a GPS waiting for you.
Yeah thanks RangerBob, I know it sounds a bit solar-powered but I like using the road atlas, know where I've been and plan where I'm goin rather than listening to Microsoft Annie calling a left or right, "50 yards ahead" in lane 3 of 6 lanes of truck traffic on the hoof at 70mph! Thanks for the heads-up on M.E.Q, I'll check it out.

I have mine set to 'Italian'. I call her Francesca. She keeps saying things like "Quando possibile, fare inversione a u." Dunno what that means, but it sure sounds sexy when she says it!

Come by the South Carolina Railroad Museum on a Saturday, and I will see about a cab ride in an ex military locomotive. Right now we operate 5 locomotives, either ex Air Force or ex Army. Pm me for details if you are interested.

If you come up I-15 from LA to Ogden, Utah area there are several things in the area. At Hill AFB is a Air Force museum with many aircraft and missile trucks. In Ogden is the Union Station museum which has several locomotives, some old cars, John M. Browning arms museum and more. Ogden is also home to Boyce Equipment which is a dealer/supplier of MV trucks. Google Ogden Utah and you will find much more here too.

Our little rural state has one possible consideration- Clark Trucks in Poca, WV.

http://clarktruck.com/supportedvehicle.aspx

They specialize in exporting mil trucks worldwide:

[h=1]Supported Vehicle Platforms[/h] A partial list of vehicle platform supported by Clark including either RESET or Refurbishment along with all Logistical Spare Parts and Training:

  • M44 Series (M35) 2.5-Ton
  • M809 Series (M813) 5-Ton
  • M900 Series 5 Ton
  • M911 Tractors and M7474 Trailers
  • Commando V150 Family of Vehicles
  • Dragoon Family of Wheeled Armored Vehicles
  • M113 Tracked Vehicle including A1, A2, A2MK1 & A2+
  • Scorpion Light Tank
  • HMMWV Family of Vehicles
They have been around a long time. I used to go by their yard when I was in high school in the 1960s and drool at the lines of trucks.

Enjoy your trip here!

If you can't make our show at Sussex end of April, please feel free to contact me by PM or email when you expect to be in the NJ/NYC metro area. I'll pass the word you're coming through and try to hook you up. MTA is a good sized club with a lot of good guys. While I'm drawing a blank at the moment (other than West Point), I'm pretty sure one of them will come up with something worth checking out.

If you're going through Pennsylvania, consider stopping by the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_Curve_(Pennsylvania)

It's where I grew up. Several members on here are located there. It's a real piece of railroad history.

Have a great trip.

If you go through Colorado you need to check out the silverton loop. It's a fully functioning narrow gauge rail line from Durango to silverton and back that was used for mining back in the day. A ride up and back is an all day ordeal but it sure is fun bein behind that old steam locomotive when she starts pulling a grade!
