paint looks dusty

Ok maybe some one can give me advise , we painted the HMMWV using AERVOE 990 green , we use the primer recomended and the paint to thinner ratio, for most looks good but the some areas look dusty i think thats the best way to explain it, i contacted AERVOE and they said amybe its to warm here , but we did it early in the morning and the booth was 75*, anybody can advise will be great, like to fix it or use other brand paint

Aervoe paint has a reputation of chalking and the green turning to pink after a few years.

I have never personally used it but I have seen some of the older paint jobs. yuck

They where suppost to have "fixed" this issue but you never know.

Could be humidity based. Will cloud some finishes, but I assume that the paint is a flat so would doubt too much clouding going on.

I had that happen a couple of times with that paint.I dont use it anymore,I use Gillespie paint from Rapco.Never a problem with it.

Does dusty mean rougher in texture that other areas or a blushed type of surface finish?

If rougher, that could mean that the paint wasn't sprayed wet enough and you have over spray on the surface. Also the dusty may not have the same mil thickness as the adjacent area and what you are seeing could be the primer.

If blushed, you could be trapping moisture in the finish if the humidity was high when sprayed.

If you sprayed at 75F most paints even with the basic supplied thinner should be able to be sprayed and wet out the surface without defects.

Well not my first RODEO ,After spealing with the aerove they said the paint is dring before it hits the vehicle, or its to hot in the booth, well after ligth scofing as sugested by them booth was at 73.3 degrees humity 40% yes same results, looking at options tomorrow thanks for all the post

Do you have access to toluene? If so add 20% or so to your thinner and try it again.

Also, are the dry areas the portion of the hood where the hood dips down? Try lowering the air pressure.

I don't know what type of spray gun you are using, but for applying the older enamel materials and a non hvlp gun, a DeVilbiss "E" tip and needle with #30 air cap worked well. Binks # 66 is a close match to the DeVilbiss.

I used to paint with acrylic lacquer paint, but that stuff is so fast drying, that I was always having that problem with it drying before it hit the surface, and then giving a rough texture that was a nightmare to deal with. You have to be so careful to keep the spacing between the gun and the surface just right, so it sprays on wet enough, and never turn the gun at an angle, and stop spraying when you get to the edge of the surface where the paint is going to spray down the side at an angle.

So I started using acrylic urethane paints now, and don't have nearly as much of a problem with that. It still can do it if you spray too far from the surface, but not nearly as bad. The only problem I have now is, the urethane paint remains tacky for much longer, so I have a lot more problems with bugs getting in my paint. With the lacquer paints, the bugs could crawl around on it just a couple minutes after spraying, and would not do any damage. But, that is exactly why you get that dry look and feel. Because it hardens way too fast.

Just my opinion, but I think you will be much happier with the results. After using Rapco to do my deuce I can't see myself using anything else. It was very easy to use, I"m no pro, and it turned out better than I was hoping for. You can see mine if you click the link in my sig line.

I used only the finest $14.99 gun from HF with their, now on clearence after I bought it, water seperator.

I have painted multiple vehicles with aervoe, current tan, current green and 24087, all were almost if not perfect matches to the trucks in the facility here, easy to use as the rest, Al the paint guy in NJ gives awesome right away service, and i have picked up off his porch about 3 am so we could finish early am to make a show, everybody likes something different , thatas cool but i have never seen pink , I have sen rapco 24087 turn navy grey it looked to me, I actually thought it was a done navy , until I asked, it turned out to be rapco,
