What brand and green color do you guys use to repaint a MV. I am going to have my deuce done in a week or so and I want to get the color right or as close to carc green as possible.

I'm experimenting with Behr Exterior Latex paint at the moment. I took a nice piece of brand new 383 CARC'd into Home Depot. 5 minutes later they had two gallons mixed up for me. Holy smokes, it is exactly a match. The only way you can tell is the Behr is obviously a little bit glossier, but not by much. At $20/gallon vs $120/ gallon for real CARC, it was definately worth trying. I've painted the bumper on one of my trucks for the winter and next summer. If it hasn't weathered too much and looks good, I'm going to paint one of my truck with it. So, what....$40-60 to paint the deuce.

If I remember correctly OD NORTH used HD matched Behr exterior on the front cab of his truck. The rear is all original CARC. Not much difference if you ask me. I think this paint is like 1-2 years old or so

So can this Gillispie 383 green be had in a rattle can? Like if I want to touch up some spots on my truck or trailers? This is the same green that is used on the camo paint jobs too?

I am an arvoeguy, Allen haague the paint man in NJ is awesome and has great service, he is in the MV mag...For 15 years I have used arvoe and it is really just as good as anything else,It ALL is inexpensive paint. one will find they are not exact matchs of any of them to current, but I have to say the woodland is so close unless u get real real piccy I part next to new FMTV's alot and there is like no noticable differenc......the 24087 is also hands down the best match to original .....

I believe CARNAC would be correct as the best paint correct paint for a later model and would be the most durable. I used alkyd enamel Gillespie from Rapco because it of its cost and other peoples satisfaction with it for what I wanted
There are lot of threads under the paint and bodywork section that will go into a lot more detail than I can.

I knew when this thread started it would turn in to a Gillespie verses CARC thread . That's fine, there are diehard fans of both types around here.

The main thing with any paintjob is the prep before paint. Whatever paint you use will be fine but neither will hold up well if you don't have a good surface to spray it on. I'm a Gillespie fan myself but I do think alot of the CARC problems you see are due to the military not doing good prep on repaints.

Yeah there is no way I am going to deal with true carc.... kids, cancer and all. I sent the guy getting the paint a note with gill numbers I want from rapco. I think it will be fine. There isn't a different MV around here for 70 miles to compair it to so I think it will be good enough for my old deuce.

As for the prep work, I am not being too hasty on the paint just because so much has to be done. We have plenty of primer and wire wheel work to do before I even start to think about green. We are going to be taking it apart as far as we can, ( no cap off or body off, just all the small stuff).

That is a great idea Mike. Especially for areas like the bed that need a lot of paint and get beat up. I already put on Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer on the inside of the bed with a roller. Some Behr paint from Home Despot might be just the thing!

I'll run and get the recipe for you:) Just a minute

Home Depot 383 CARC substitute recipe:

Base.....................Behr Premium Plus Exterior Flat, Matte Deep Base #4300
Here are the components:

CL RNT........AX.........D........KX.........L

...OZ............2...........1........0..........8
384th..........68........16......112......180

I really don't know what the values mean but print this off and take it in and HD will plug it into their computer. Now the paint will appear more yellow when first applied but when dry you'll see the 383. I painted one of my winches with the latex paint. When I mounted it I used a rubber mallet to beat the winch into place. It didn't even harm the paint. Not bad for latex. Believe me, I was really smacking it too
