Make sure you have your registration for truck and trailer, proof of insurance, driver's license, and make sure it is all up to date. Had a guy haul a Deuce for me, and he got escorted away from the gate because he didn't have one of his registrations up to date. We had to drive the Deuce off base and load up down the road. Don't have firearms or ammunition either. Nothing to do with me but Justin was telling me a guy called him before he got to gate to tell him he had a firearm in his truck and wanted to know if that was going to be a problem, DUH!

Dieselbob is correct. That is also the NSA entrance. They have very tight security so make sure you do not forget to remove weapons or any ammo. Trust me the dogs will inspect your vehicle inside and out. This is the tighest security of all bases I have entered when heading to a GL lot.

And "Stand by the orange cones!"

I went there yesterday and the dog was distracted by a sandwich i had laying on the console.

Lifting the hood is no longer required at Ft Meade
That's good for some people. There was some other guy entering the regular gate next to us with a pimped out Suburban and the hood wouldn't go up. He kept saying in broken English, "It's doesn't do up man, it's custom." As we drove away one of the now three guards asked him, "Well, how do you change your oil?"

So, I've got to pick up a M101A3 at Ft Meade here in a week or so. I ain't driving alone (or with my toddler son if I take him) from KY and leaving my gun at home. What option do people that own guns have when visiting this base? I'd be afraid of leaving it unattended in the hotel room while I run and pick up the trailer and back, but that may be my only option I guess.

Per MD firearms laws you're only allowed to transport your firearm from home to the range (or to where you are going to hunt), or from the place of purchase to your home. Your best bed would be to leave it in the hotel room, as the worst thing that can happen there is it get's stolen. If you show up to the gate with it, you're already in trouble before you step onto federal property.

If you want, I work about 3 miles south of the Woodrow wilson bridge (95N) on Rt 1 in Alexandria, Va. Ft Meade is about 35 miles north of me (50 min with traffic). I'm at work at 7:00am, and am here until just after 6:00pm. Get a hotel around here just south of Alexandria, wake up, drop gun off with me at my job, go get your trailer, and pick up your gun on the way back.

I don't like leaving the house un-armed, so I understand where your coming from. IM me if you want to work it out.

You need to also be aware of any ammo in your truck. NONE allowed...period. No spent casings...nothing. The dogs will sniff them out and you are in trouble.

Would I need anything special for my son? Don't know which one I'd bring, if I even do, but one is 3.5 and other is 5. They don't have photo ID, so would I need a birth certificate or something? Would they even be allowed on the base?

A friend of mine owns a local rock quarry. He left early on a Friday to open up their Florida house. His wife closed up the business at the end of the day and went to her car to drive to the airport and meet my buddy in FL. Her battery was dead and everyone had left for the day. She fished around for some keys to one of the old beater pickups used around the quarry and headed off to Dulles for her flight. She never made it through security. After several hours, some good explanations, and a search of the pickup she drove to the AP, she was released to go home. She changed clothes, scrubbed her flight bags, took a shower, and had someone deliver her car to the house. She was able to board a flight successfully the next morning.
