Please help me identify the function of this rusty component on a GEP 6.5L Engine

The oil filter is on the LEFT side of the motor. There are 2 connections for the hoses that run up to the oil cooler above the radiator.
Or do you mean the tiny plug? If so, the pic in the service book just looks like a plug.

Yes, I should have been more clear. I am trying to figure out what the rusty stubbed end pipe above the oil filter and the oil cooler line is in this photo. All 6.5 GEP's have this same port but I have no idea what it is for?

yup. i totally forgot that was there. there is a hole at the top. if not plugged up, any liquid on top of the motor will run out there instead of pooling on top.
