Ya got that right. A heard of these can happen easily.

Its a sickness, but there is treatment.

Start by taking him to Harbor Freight tool and letting him get a few more LARGE tools

I had been in heavy trucking for years and retired after a bout with Kidney Cancer and then a few strokes.

The Kid getting me interested in a deuce has been great therapy.

As I mentioned, it's a sickness from which there is no return, but it's not fatal :mrgreen:

It should end in "-10", that's the operator's level book, The "-20" and "-20P" are the unit maintenance Service and Parts manuals respectively. The "-30", "-34" and "-35" series are the rebuild/repair facilities manuals. Manuals ending in "P" are parts manuals, and there can be multiples of most of the higher level books, IE, -34-1, -34-2, -34-3, -34-4, etc. HTH.

Well, it's been awhile since we have had time to post anything. Our business took a radical turn when we finally got into the Seattle stadium district. Talk about things getting out of hand!

So, right off the bat let me address you "buckwilk" the chance will be had again to have a beer together. When soldier A is not on the job he is the funniest person you will ever meet, and despite his career, thinks absolutely nothing of himself. He thinks everything is funny. So, when we get back to the Morton Loggers Jubilee we can have a do over.

USMC I took your advice and did a little flee baying and got us a real nice 8024 manual for about 40 bucks. Lots to read now. And for an inexperienced crew these TMs can be a little confusing to be honest. When the football season is over it's going to be time to start working on Ramona and fluid changes are first on the list.

This is where things get confusing. Soldier A is still working on inventory like a hamster on crack and I'm trying to do tax prep and figure out how much and what type of oil the engine and transmission take. If I got the jumping around in the book right it looks like 11 quarts of oil for the engine and 16 for the transmission. But what kind in each. IMG_1042.jpg

We followed the book with non-detergent, straight weight engine oils in both. It's easy, historical, we only need one spare jug for oil in the storage box, it's what the book says, it works, it's cheap, it's the correct thickness.......

There are a few different schools of thought and here's a solid alternative......

As to oil, for over 30 years we have used hy-tran which is the International Harvester hydraulic drive transmission oil. It will not deteriorate the early style clutches. It has a higher sheer factor than Dexron and is more viscosity consistent than motor oil. This is by far the best choice for fluid.

Some folks have had luck with atf and others with hy-tran and here are their stories.

I use 15W40 for the engine and Hy-Tran for the transmission. I like the idea of one oil for both and may try that on one of the other trucks.

I like to use Rotella diesel oil straight 30 weight in these old engines. It still has zinc in it and the straight weight means my oil pressure gauge does not drop to zero once the oil gets hot.

Buckwilk Thank you and that sounds great. SturmTyger- What is the importance of zinc in the engine oil? Also I looked up the Hy-tran and it looks like IH doesn't make it anymore. So, what is the best substitute, boys?

Case bought out IH so you might can find what Case calls it now.

The zinc helps coat the parts inside the engine and protect them. You can even find newly produced antique car oil $$ that has zinc in it still. Right now diesel oil still has it.

Roger that on the zinc Sturm. So, Ramona will be getting a belly full of Rotella when soldier A gets the chance. I also think the Case Hy-tran is what I saw when I did a search last night. So, we can go with that. It's killing soldier A not to be caring for and driving Ramona, but we are still in the boom of football season and things have not slowed down yet as we thought they would.

I do need to round up everything he needs, so he is prepared once he starts. I can almost guarantee that once he does his OCD will kick in and I may be sleeping alone while he spends all his time with his new girl. Lol

So, soldier A has been reading and drinking himself to sleep every night trying to learn everything about Ramona he can. One of the things he seems to be stuck on is replacement of all the rubber brake lines, and where to get them. He has also become fascinated with the products offered by Jack Clifford Performance. He seems to be in love with the dual carb and intake they offer. Does anyone have any experience with this set up?carbs.jpeg

Rubber brake lines do go bad and it's not a bad idea to replace them. Just remember if you fine nice NOS lines they are just as old as these trucks. Find the place near you that builds hydraulic lines for equipment. They can build brake lined for you if you bring them a sample of each.

Dual carbs! These trucks only get about 3 miles per gallon. You might flip to gallons per mile. :)

Help needed

There have been some unfortunate incidents at the motorpool as of recect. This is going to force the required services to be done on Ramona as soon as possible, so she can be moved safely. We have both tried to find as much Intel as possible about the front end rebuild but need a matter of fact list of everything needed for a complete overhaul as soon as we can round up all the required parts.

We have a brake reline company and a rubber brakeline manufacture lined up, but we need all the seals and gaskets to get this done.

Check out our part list up in the sticky section. We have the seals and gasket numbers listed. The only seal you might need to order is the outer hub seals. We have not been able to find the civilian equivalent yet. They can be found on eBay or from Memphis....maybe other places too but I know those for sure. If you are going to do the steering knuckles too, Memphis is the only place I know of that sells the kits.

Aspiration for conversation

SturmTyger, just for the sake of good conversation and information acquisition, here is what Clifford claims about their dual carb setup. With their split header set they claim 120% performance and economy on the GMC 302.

The WOW factor is also a big consideration, as we plan to build something likened to a movie prop truck out of Ramona, so she is the biggest attraction at any event we go to. And we could not have been more blessed than to find her to be the old girl for that task.

That would look so cool guarding her nose and winch.
