Point me at a flywheel tach sensor please.

Is there one out there that will bolt to a 4l80e bell housing or something equally easy to generate a signal for a tach that reads number of teeth?
I've got an an old marine tach I want to run. It's clamped on the column already.

issapro makes flywheel pickups, they also have little magnetic hall switch generators that one can attach to a harmonic balancer. if your tach is a gas engine tach, intended to work off the negative side of an ignition coil these sensors wont work. I do fail to see why one needs a tach with an auto trans or a stationary power unit, like a pump I get 3 or 4 calls a summer with some one wanting a diesel tach on their pump motor around here.

yes that would be a hall switch, same as Chrysler electronic ignition. these sensors are used fro all kind of stuff on the new electronic engines now days.

the ones I know of need the bell housing drilled and tapped. amc with renix computers had a cool flywheel sensor that mounted through a hole in the bell housing

I have a stewart warner tach that has a hall effect sensor. Back when the truck had the 700r4, The bracket was just a 2" wide piece of steel about 6" long or so with a bend in it. It used one of the bellhousing bolts to mount. There was a hole in the bellhousing cover and the sensor went into that. You can see the sensor in this picture. Its the gold colored object. Its kind of hard to see but you get the picture. Solid mount and its adjustable with the double nuts. These sensors have to be mounted so it can be adjusted. The truck now has a 5 speed and I just drilled and tapped the bellhousing for the sensor. Hope this helps.

Oh and the sensor I use is a stewart warner 82646, which they technically call a magnetic sensor and not a hall effect. This sensor is specifically meant for flywheels and flexplates by my catalog.

I believe the hole on the timing cover it is for crank angle sensor. I am not sure there are any tach interfaces that work with this. The easiest way is with Dakota digital and the alternator or if you just want tach, the tiny tach is great but no outputs.
