Possible water temp probe location?

Hello all! I was wondering if any one has ever used or had a reason not to use the hole that is plugged on the upper pass. side of the water pump? I checked and there is no issue with probe depth, etc.

Thanks much!

I will confirm that installing an aftermarket mechanical water temp gauge in the OEM temp warning switch (driver side, front of cylinder head) is a bolt in job and requires only the supplied bushing with most gauges.

Warthog, thanks for the advice! Actually, it will be being installed before the alts and batteries are even back in the truck yet, my one worry is interference with the pass. side alt.
Skinny I know that would just be a simple swap but I want to keep the light and have a gauge. I plan on switching to speed hut gauges eventually and the line I want has a light built into the gauge, but for now, Ive got to go this way.

You live in Kokomo? I'm about 20-30 miles south of you.

I got my gauge in and working yesterday. I checked the probe depth and removed it again after cranking over the motor and did not see any contact issues. However, after driving for 20 minutes or so, the temp on the gauge never got over 140. It makes me think it is not getting good enough fluid coverage to get a good reading. I'm going to leave it there for now and monitor it, but if it doesn't work, I'm going to change it's location when I go to change out my rad hoses.

You can see behind this that I added a fuel hose barrier over the rigid fuel line since I had contact with my alternator. I had to clamp the top to keep it from moving, zip tie wouldn't do it. (I also bent the fuel line back about an inch).

Gauge installed and running in the driveway. There was a bracket on the backside of that panel for the volts gauge so I couldn't really center the two.

There was a discussion of this just recently, and several pointed out that the water pump is getting coolant from the radiator, so it's not registering engine temp correctly. You might want to look up that thread.
