power steering fluid leak

I thought it was a bad hose.
I replaced both pressure lines, and its still leaking.
I'm afraid its the gear box. Its dry on the top.
Here is a crappy pic.
Gimme yall's input please.

The seals and bearings will go out in those. You can get a rebuild kit, but it requires some specialized tools to actually do the job right (ask me how I know). You can go to a wrecking yard, or you can try the auto parts store. I bought a Hydro-boost gearbox for my civvy diesel about 2 or 3 years ago. As I recall, it was relatively inexpensive, maybe in the $150 range.

The seal for the sector shaft is real easy to change. You do need a pitman arm puller to get the pitman arm off. Then pull the c-clip that holds the seal in. Put a big pan under the steering box, start the truck and turn the steering wheel. That seal will shoot right out.

I saw somebody do this at a M715 FE on the trail after he had added a quart of fluid and it just ran right out. He knew it was going before the event and had a new seal and arm puller in the truck. 5 minutes and we were back on the trail with no leaks and power steering.

Its the seal behind the rag joint its wet above the steering sector shaft.

That seal is mechanically easy to dig out and replace. Just a real pain to get to and work on in the truck. I will second the above post about pulling the box and replacing all the seals. Just about the same amount of work and everything will be good to go for a long time.

I'm not usually one for additives, but the Lucas Power Steering stop leak dried mine up after a bottle and a half.

I bought a rebuilt steering box from summit.
Price was around 100 i think.

I wish i had rebuilt mine, just so i knew what it looked like inside

Watch where you buy your steering box from. A few years back I had dropped off my M1009 to my mechanic friend for a wheel alignment. He calls me and says the box has too much play to do an alignment, I need a new box. Went to the local Lordco, a chain parts store like NAPA. They had one in stock, looked good, all freshly painted. Took it to him, once again he calls, tells me the box is a piece of ****, it has more play than my original. Now he tells me that the only place to get one is a place called precision steering, that one was good. It seems one must source a box from a dedicated specialist firm, stay away from your regular parts stocking type store.
